The Oxford Handbook of National Security Intelligence
The Oxford Handbook of National Security Intelligence (Oxford Handbooks) edited by Loch K. Johnson
English | March 12, 2010 | ISBN: 0195375882, 0199929475 | PDF | 912 pages | 6.7 MB
The Oxford Handbook of National Security Intelligence is a state-of-the-art work on intelligence and national security. Edited by Loch Johnson, one of the world's leading authorities on the subject, the handbook examines the topic in full, beginning with an examination of the major theories of intelligence. It then shifts its focus to how intelligence agencies operate, how they collect information from around the world, the problems that come with transforming "raw" information into credible analysis, and the difficulties in disseminating intelligence to policymakers. It also considers the balance between secrecy and public accountability, and the ethical dilemmas that covert and counterintelligence operations routinely present to intelligence agencies. Throughout, contributors factor in broader historical and political contexts that are integral to understanding how intelligence agencies function in our information-dominated age.

The Oxford Handbook of Experimental Semantics and Pragmatics
The Oxford Handbook of Experimental Semantics and Pragmatics (Oxford Handbooks) edited by Chris Cummins, Napoleon Katsos
English | May 14, 2019 | ISBN: 0198791763 | EPUB | 688 pages | 5.4 MB
This handbook is the first to explore the growing field of experimental semantics and pragmatics. In the past 20 years, experimental data has become a major source of evidence for building theories of language meaning and use, encompassing a wide range of topics and methods. Following an introduction from the editors, the chapters in this volume offer an up-to-date account of research in the field spanning 31 different topics, including scalar implicatures, presuppositions, counterfactuals, quantification, metaphor, prosody, and politeness, as well as exploring how and why a particular experimental method is suitable for addressing a given theoretical debate. The volume's forward-looking approach also seeks to actively identify questions and methods that could be fruitfully combined in future experimental research.

The Harmonies of the Universe Quantum Mechanics and Music
The Harmonies of the Universe: Quantum Mechanics and Music by Gerald W. Scanlon
English | November 19, 2020 | ISBN: N/A | ASIN: B08NVVWCB1 | 60 pages | PDF (conv) | 7.42 Mb
More than 2500 years ago, according to ancient sources, Pythagoras applied his discoveries in music theory to the behavior of the celestial objects. Pluck a string, and the pitch of the note it produces is related to the length of the string. When the lengths of two strings are a simple ratio, e.g., 1/2, 2/3, etc., the notes together sound harmonious. Pythagoras believed that the universe itself hummed with its own harmony-beautiful, divine, and inaudible to human ears. He characterized the intervals between successive orbits, such as those of Mercury and Venus, as either tones or half-tones (the smallest intervals in the musical scale), adding up to seven whole tones that form a perfectly harmonious natural order. In this book, the author first designs a geometrical framework by using prime numbers. He then links the geometrical framework to the inverse square law, atomic structure, origin of the universe, and visible light before revealing the connection between quantum mechanics and music.
