Language - The Loaded Weapon The Use and Abuse of Language Today
Language - The Loaded Weapon: The Use and Abuse of Language Today by Dwight Bolinger
English | October 13, 1980 | ISBN: 0582291089, 1138159662 | EPUB | 224 pages | 2.5 MB
Today there is a reawakening interest in how language affects our lives. It comes with every threat to our safety and every promise of better times. It is a burning issue among minorities and a running debate between the attackers and defenders of our schools. Our deepest problems all are entangled with it: What shall be the official speech of emerging nations like Zambia and the Philippines, or even in certain areas of established ones like Belgium and Canada? What kind of English should be taught, or should there be no standard at all? How is government to make its regulations understandable? What are the verbal persuasions of television doing to our children? Which way does information flow, what are its biases, when does it inform and when conceal, and who benefits? Are the people who consider themselves experts in these matters as expert as they pretend to be? We feel adrift in a sea of words, and would welcome and a chart and a compass.

Knowing Fictions Picaresque Reading in the Early Modern Hispanic World
Knowing Fictions: Picaresque Reading in the Early Modern Hispanic World by Barbara Fuchs
English | November 30, 2020 | ISBN: 0812252616 | PDF | 208 pages | 7.7 MB
European exploration and conquest expanded exponentially in the late fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, and as the horizons of imperial experience grew more distant, strategies designed to convey the act of witnessing came to be a key source of textual authority. From the relación to the captivity narrative, the Hispanic imperial project relied heavily on the first-person authority of genres whose authenticity undergirded the ideological armature of national consolidation, expansion, and conquest. At the same time, increasing pressures for religious conformity in Spain, as across Europe, required subjects to bare themselves before external authorities in intimate confessions of their faith. Emerging from this charged context, the unreliable voice of the pícaro poses a rhetorical challenge to the authority of the witness, destabilizing the possibility of trustworthy representation precisely because of his or her intimate involvement in the narrative.

Peter Caygill, "Javelin from the Cockpit: Britain's First Delta Wing Fighter"
English | 2012 | ISBN: 1848846568 | EPUB | pages: 256 | 1.8 mb
The Gloster Javelin was designed to be a night/all-weather fighter. It was first introduced into RAF service in 1956 and was retired in 1967. It was a large two-man, twin-engined and delta-winged aircraft. Although extremely rugged in construction pilots were banned from spinning as test flights had proved it impossible to recover. During its service nine different marks were introduced. At first it was armed with four wing-mounted cannon but as technology advanced air-to-air missiles replaced them. In its role as a night/all-weather fighter it bristled with Britain's latest radar and interception devices.
