Iberê Kuntz, "Gravitational Theories Beyond General Relativity"
English | 2019 | ISBN: 3030211967 | PDF | pages: 88 | 1.6 mb
Despite the success of general relativity in explaining classical gravitational phenomena, several problems at the interface between gravitation and high energy physics still remain open. The purpose of this thesis is to explore quantum gravity and its phenomenological consequences for dark matter, gravitational waves and inflation. A new formalism to classify gravitational theories based on their degrees of freedom is introduced and, in light of this classification, it is argued that dark matter is no different from modified gravity. Gravitational waves are shown to be damped due to quantum degrees of freedom. The consequences for gravitational wave events are also discussed. The non-minimal coupling of the Higgs boson to gravity is studied in connection with Starobinsky inflation and its implications for the vacuum instability problem is analyzed.

Getting on Message: Challenging the Christian Right from the Heart of the Gospel By Rev. Peter Laarman
2006 | 228 Pages | ISBN: 0807077216 | PDF | 1 MB
In the 2004 election, 80 percent of those who claimed В"moral values” was the most important issue affecting their vote cast their ballots for Bush, as did 63 percent of frequent churchgoers. Since then, the Religious Right has continued to cement an association between В"Christian” and В"moral” values and conservative policies. Getting On Message challenges this association from the very heart of the Christian tradition. These readable and incisive essays use biblical framing to discern the personal and social ethics that truly embody Christian values in the contemporary world. В* Marilynne Robinson discusses the link between personal holiness and a generous spirit В* Garret Keizer looks at the growing wealth/class divide from a Christian perspective В* Rev. Heidi Neumark examines hospitality as a core Christian value В* Rev. Chloe Breyer explores a justice criterion for women’s decisions on abortion В* Rev. Bill Sinkford asks what really constitutes a God-approved marriage and family Getting On Message is a book for clergy, for politically active people of faith, and for progressive organizers and strategists who want to learn how to talk to religious believers about the values they share. Rev. Peter Laarman is executive director of Progressive Christians Uniting, codirector of the Center for Prophetic Renewal in Los Angeles, and a board member of Faith Voices for the Common Good. Before moving to California, Laarman served as senior minister of New York’s historic Judson Memorial Church. He worked for twenty years as a strategist and communications specialist in the labor movement prior to training for the ministry.

Thomas C Patterson, "From Acorns to Warehouses: Historical Political Economy of Southern California's Inland Empire"
English | 2014 | ISBN: 1629580392 | PDF | pages: 284 | 2.4 mb
Thomas C. Patterson's large-scale history of the Inland Empire of Southern California traces the social, political and economic changes in this region from the first Native American settlement 12,000 years ago to the present. Framing his discussion of this region in the general growth trajectory of California's socio-economic history, he is able to connect landscape, resources, wealth, labor, and inequality using a Marxian framework for many key periods of the region's history. In moving between large scale historical changes, regional adaptations and resistance to those changes, and a framework that places those responses in theoretical context, Patterson's work allows the reader to see how inland Southern California developed into the warehouse empire of the 21st century and its prospects for the future.

Forgotten Legacy: William McKinley, George Henry White, and the Struggle for Black Equality by Benjamin R. Justesen
English | December 16, 2020 | ISBN: 0807173851 | EPUB | 368 pages | 2.6 MB
In Forgotten Legacy, Benjamin R. Justesen reveals a previously unexamined facet of William McKinley's presidency: an ongoing dedication to the advancement of African Americans, including their appointment to significant roles in the federal government and the safeguarding of their rights as U.S. citizens. During the first two years of his administration, McKinley named nearly as many African Americans to federal office as all his predecessors combined. He also acted on many fronts to stiffen federal penalties for participation in lynch mobs and to support measures promoting racial tolerance. Indeed, Justesen's work suggests that McKinley might well be considered the first "civil rights president," especially when compared to his next five successors in office. Nonetheless, historians have long minimized, trivialized, or overlooked McKinley's cooperative relationships with prominent African American leaders, including George Henry White, the nation's only black congressman between 1897 and 1901.
