Women Surviving Apartheid's Prisons
Women Surviving Apartheid's Prisons by Shanthini Naidoo, Donna Bryson
English | ISBN: 1682570975 | 240 pages | EPUB | January 1, 2021 | 1.58 Mb
In 1969, South Africa's apartheid government arrested anti-apartheid leaders and activists nationwide for a key planned show trial. Among them were seven women, three of whom (including Winnie Madikizela-Mandela) have since died. This book by South African journalist Shanthini Naidoo uses rich interview material to share the previously unknown stories of the four imprisoned women who are still living: Joyce Sikhakhane-Rankin, Rita Ndzanga, Shanthie Naidoo, and Nondwe Mankahla. These four freedom fighters were held in solitary confinement for more than a year and subjected to brutal torture in a bid to force them to testify against their comrades. But they refused to do so, which forced the whole trial effort to collapse. Women Surviving Apartheid's Prisons explores how women from different oppressed communities in South Africa defied traditional gender expectations and played a key role in the overthrow of Apartheid.

Who is Racist Why Racism Matters
Who is Racist? Why Racism Matters by Alexis Tan
English | Jan 1, 2021 | ISBN: 1793512248 | 144 pages | EPUB | 1 MB
The topic of race is often mentioned in conversations regarding politics and social issues. In fact, race ranks among the most frequently mentioned topics in the media and current political debates. Yet, most people and public officials are reluctant to talk about race other than stating, "I am not a racist" when, in fact, our thinking about many of these issues may be subconsciously grounded in racial perceptions. This book invites you to participate in a meaningful conversation about race and racism. It addresses the following questions: What is racism? Why does racism exist? Who is a racist? Why does racism matter in social, personal, and political contexts? What are strategies to address racism? Author Alexis Tan expertly addresses these important questions by weaving social science research with media stories that demonstrate everyday instances of both racism and hope. He shares personal experiences and observations as a man of color and a privileged American to underscore the complexity of issues related to race and racism. Who is a Racist? Why Racism Matters sheds a bright and enduring light on racism, its consequences, and how it affects us all.

White Blood Personal Journeys With Childhood Leukaemia
White Blood: Personal Journeys With Childhood Leukaemia By Mel Greaves
2008 | 217 Pages | ISBN: 9812790403 | PDF | 9 MB
There are countless academic books on the subject of childhood leukemia. The idea behind this book, however, is very different. Here, we look at the extraordinary story of childhood leukemia from very distinct and unique perspectives: a distinguished physician who has lived through the transition of the disease from despair to success (and who played a key role in the latter); a distinguished laboratory scientist who has helped breach the barrenness of biological ignorance of the disease to reveal its nature; a patient who has been confronted with the tough realities of the illness and has been cured; and parents who have been given the worst possible news -- that their child is diagnosed with leukemia -- and who have endured the prolonged treatment, hope, and despair or relief that follows. These individuals recount their personal experiences, challenges, and interactions with the disease in ways that complement and contrast with each other. Thus, not only does the book contain extraordinary stories involving the very best of biomedical research and clinical advances, but it also embodies very human tales of resilience, optimism and courage. Contents: Introduction to Childhood Leukemia (M Greaves & D Pinkel); A Paediatrician's Journey (D Pinkel); A Scientist's Journey (M Greaves); A Child Psychologist's Journey (J van Dongen-Melman); A Mother's Journey (N Horlick); A Family's Journey: The Child (J Fernandes); A Family's Journey: The Mother (D Fernandes).
