Avian Influenza
Avian Influenza By H. D. Klenk, M. N. Matrosovich, J. Stech
2008 | 300 Pages | ISBN: 3805585020 | PDF | 6 MB
Because of its high impact on both animal and human health, avian influenza has become a matter of increasing public concern and growing scientific interest within the last decade. This volume gives an overview of the most important results of these research efforts and provides information about the ecology and epidemiology of avian influenza with particular emphasis on recent H5N1 outbreaks in China, Siberia and Europe. Several articles deal with new vaccination strategies, the use of antivirals and other control measures to combat outbreaks of avian influenza.Further chapters illustrate that molecular biology, culminating in the generation of influenza viruses by recombinant DNA technology, was instrumental in unraveling the roles of the viral hemagglutinin and polymerase as well as cellular signaling pathways and innate immunity in pathogenesis and interspecies transmission. Finally, the threat of a pandemic originating from avian influenza viruses is illustrated by the example of the Spanish influenza of 1918. This comprehensive publication on avian influenza viruses and their relevance for human influenza will be of great value to all influenza virologists, molecular biologists, public health scientists, veterinary virologists, ecologists, and scientists engaged in drug design and vaccine development.

Assimilation's Agent My Life as a Superintendent in the Indian Boarding School System
Assimilation's Agent: My Life as a Superintendent in the Indian Boarding School System By Edwin L. Chalcraft, Cary C. Collins, Cary C. Collins
2004 | 437 Pages | ISBN: 0803215169 | PDF | 3 MB
Assimilation's Agent reveals the life and opinions of Edwin L. Chalcraft (1855-1943), a superintendent in the federal Indian boarding schools during the critical periodof forced assimilation in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Chalcraft was hired by the Office of Indian Affairs (now known as the Bureau of Indian Affairs) in 1883. During his nearly four decades of service, he worked at a number of Indian boarding schools and agencies, including the Chehalis Indian School in Oakville, Washington; Puyallup Indian School in Tacoma, Washington; Chemawa Indian School in Salem, Oregon; Wind River Indian School in Wind River, Wyoming; Jones Male Academy in Hartshorne, Oklahoma; and Siletz Indian Agency in Oregon. In this memoir Chalcraft discusses the Grant peace policy, the inspection system, allotment, the treatment of tuberculosis, corporal punishment, alcoholism, and patronage. Extensive coverage is also given to the Indian Shaker Church and the government's response to this perceived threat to assimilation. Assimilation's Agent illuminates the sometimes treacherous political maneuverings and difficult decisions faced by government officials at Indian boarding schools. It offers a rarely heard and today controversial "top-down" view of government policies to educate and assimilate Indians.Drawing on a large collection of unpublished letters and documents, Cary C. Collins's introduction and notes furnish important historical background and context. Assimilation's Agent illustrates the government's long-term program for dealing with Native peoples and the shortcomings of its approach during one of the most consequential eras in the long and often troubled history of American Indian and white relations.

Applying Basic Anatomy For Yoga Instructors and Everyone In Between
Applying Basic Anatomy For Yoga Instructors and Everyone In Between by Alecia Croft
2020 | ASIN: B08F6DJ848 | English | 134 pages | PDF/EPUB | 5/3 MB
In my previous book titled Basic Anatomy For Yoga Instructors and Everyone In Between we discuss the basics of the human body. We covered things like bony landmarks, basic muscle actions, the effect of aging on bones and more. If you need to start at the very beginning, I hope you will start with the first book then move onto this one. We will dive into some more specific aspects of the human body.We will learn how muscles are structured and how they contract, how bones remodel and how reflexes work. We cover the origins, insertions, and actions of many muscles. The nervous system and stress response are covered more in depth in this book than in the previous one. We also cover planes of motion and I share some of my common findings for muscle imbalances.Either book can stand alone, however, some information is built upon the knowledge gained in the first one.

American Humor
Arthur Power Dudden, "American Humor"
English | ISBN: 0195042123 | | 186 pages | PDF | 9 MB
The paramount question answered in this absorbing collection of essays is: What's so funny about American humor, and why? What are American humor's characteristics? How have they evolved and displayed themselves? Which characteristics are distinctively, or even uniquely, American? Originally appearing as an issue of the American Quarterly, these essays take a close look at American humor from revolutionary times to the present day, and particularly focus on the neglected trends of the past fifty years. Looking at American comic figures as diverse-and even surprising-as Mark Twain and Richard Nixon, at various vehicles for American humor such as comic strips, radio and television, movies, and standup comedians, and at different genres of humor including political, ethnic, and feminist humor, this book brings a lively new perspective to the study of American culture.
