Listening to Conflict: Finding Constructive Solutions to Workplace Disputes By Erik J. Van Slyke
1999 | 122 Pages | ISBN: 0814404294 | PDF | 2 MB
I found this book to have a great balance of deep, researched information with practical, easy-to-read examples of how to apply that information to life. The author is obviously incredibly passionate about what he does and it shows in his writing. Producing a book like this is no easy task. Mr. Van Slyke obviously took the time to make sure he was being exhaustive with his research but also contemplative in how that informative can be helpful to us, the reader. I highly recommend 'Listening to Conflict'!

Life-Span Extension: Single-Cell Organisms to Man By Valter D. Longo (auth.), Christian Sell, Antonello Lorenzini, Holly M. Brown-Borg (eds.)
2009 | 198 Pages | ISBN: 1603275061 | PDF | 6 MB
In recent years, remarkable discoveries have been made concerning the underlying mechanisms of aging. In Life-Span Extension: Single-Cell Organisms to Man, the editors bring together a range of illuminating perspectives from researchers investigating the aging process in a variety of species. This novel work addresses the aging process in species ranging from yeast to man and, among other subjects, features detailed discussions of the naked mole-rat, an exceptionally long-lived rodent; the relationship between dietary factors/food restriction and aging; and an evolutionary view of the human aging process.Single mutations that extend life span have been identified in yeast, worms, flies, and mice, whereas studies in humans have identified potentially important markers for successful aging. At the same time, it has been discovered that the genes and pathways identified in these studies involve a surprisingly small set of conserved functions, most of which have been the focus of aging research for some time. For example, the mTOR pathway, a regulator of translation and protein synthesis, has been identified as a common longevity pathway in yeast and Caenorhabditis elegans. In mammals, this pathway intersects with neuroendocrine pathways and with the insulin/insulin-like growth factor pathways, which have been identified as major modulators of life span and aging in both invertebrates and mice.Novel, emerging technologies and the increasingly wide variety of systems that are now used to study aging and the mechanisms of aging provide enormous opportunities for the identification of common pathways that modulate longevity. It is these common pathways that are the focus of this important volume.
Life writing in Reformation Europe: lives of reformers by friends, disciples and foes By Irena Backus
2008 | 302 Pages | ISBN: 0754660559 | PDF | 2 MB
The Reformation period witnessed an explosion in the number of biographies of contemporary religious figures being published. Whether lives of reformers worthy of emulation, or heretics deserving condemnation, the genre of biography became a key element in the confessional rivalries that raged across Europe in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Offering more than a general survey of Life writing, this volume examines key issues and questions about how this trend developed among different confessions and how it helped shape lasting images of reformers, particularly Luther and Calvin up to the modern period. This is the first-ever full length study of the subject showing that Lives of the reformers constitute an integral part of the intellectual and cultural history of the period, serving as an important source of information about the different Reformations. Depending on their origin, they provide a lesson in theology but also in civic values and ideals of education of the period. Genevan Lives in particular also point up the delicate issue of 'Reformed hagiography' which their authors try to avoid with a varying degree of success. Having consistently been at the forefront of the study of the intellectual history of the Reformation, Irena Backus is perfectly placed to highlight the importance of Life writing. This is a path-breaking study that will open up a new way of viewing the confessional conflicts of the period and their historiography.
Kathryn Rentz, Marie Flatley, Paula Lentz, "Lesikar's Business Communication: Connecting in a Digital World"
English | 2010 | ISBN: 0073377791 | PDF | pages: 688 | 17.7 mb
Lesikar's Business Communication: Connecting in a Digital World, 12/e by Rentz, Flatley, and Lentz takes the solid foundational principles of this classic text and applies them to business contexts in the 21st century. While continuing to focus on careful problem analysis, adaptation of the message to the audience, and maintaining positive human relations, this edition discusses current challenges for business communicators and gives students practice meeting those challenges. Toward this end, the book maintains the realism, technological currency, and pedagogical effectiveness for which it has become well known and respected.
Geoffrey M. Vaughan, "Leo Strauss and His Catholic Readers"
English | 2020 | ISBN: 0813233097 | PDF | pages: 347 | 1.7 mb
This book looks at the work and influence of Leo Strauss in a variety of ways that will be of interest to readers of political philosophy. It will be of particular interest to Catholics and scholars of other religious traditions. Strauss had a great deal of interaction with his contemporary Catholic scholars, and many of his students or their students teach or have taught at Catholic colleges and universities in America. Leo Strauss and His Catholic Readers brings together work by scholars from two continents, some of whom knew Strauss, one of whom was his student at the University of Chicago. The first section of essays considers Catholic responses to Strauss's project of recovering Classical natural right as against modern individual rights. Some of the authors suggest that his approach can be a fruitful corrective to an uncritical reception of modern ideas. Nevertheless, most point out that the Catholic cannot accept all of Strauss's project. The second section deals with areas of overlap between Strauss and Catholics. Some of the chapters explore encounters with his contemporary scholars while others turn to more current concerns. The final section approaches the theological-political question itself, a question central to both Strauss's work and that of the Catholic intellectual tradition. This section of the book considers the relationship of Strauss's work to Christianity and Christian commitments at a broader level. Because Christianity does not have an explicit political doctrine, Christians have found themselves as rulers, subjects, and citizens in a variety of political regimes. Leo Strauss's return to Platonic political philosophy can provide a useful lens through which his Catholic readers can assess what it means for there to be a best regime.
