Frontiers in Research of the Renin-Angiotensin System on Human Disease
Frontiers in Research of the Renin-Angiotensin System on Human Disease By Po Sing Leung, Po Sing Leung
2008 | 310 Pages | ISBN: 1402063717 | PDF | 4 MB
The significant impact of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) on basic research and its clinical relevance are reflected by the flourishing publication of original and review research articles; by the appearance of whole issues of journals dedicated to the RAS; and by specialist books on the RAS. In such a rapidly evolving environment, publications that span the spectrum from basic research to the bedside, fill a particularly valuable niche for clinicians and researchers alike. The primary aim of this book is to provide a topical and timely forum for the critical appraisal of an area of RAS research that is expanding rapidly. In this respect, a collection of thirteen chapters from distinguished and world-class experts in the field has been presented on the contemporary research of the RAS and their implications in human disease. It is clear that outstanding and stellar work on the novel roles of local RAS and their potential clinical application is being done in laboratories and clinics across the globe. This volume should be of general interest to the readership of our Proteases in Biology and Disease book series, as well as being a comprehensive book for basic scientists, clinicians and newcomers to this field.

Forensic Science An Illustrated Dictionary
Forensic Science: An Illustrated Dictionary By John C. Brenner
2003 | 282 Pages | ISBN: 0849314577 | PDF | 17 MB
Investigators, prosecutors, defense attorneys, professionals within the field of law enforcement, and other criminal justice personnel need to understand forensic terms when communicating with forensic scientists or interpreting forensic lab results.Forensic Science-An Illustrated Dictionary introduces commonly-used forensic terms, many of which are crucial to the interpretation and understanding of laboratory report findings. The field of forensics grew considerably since the publication of the previous version of this book, the Forensic Science Glossary. With the introduction of new procedures and methods of analysis, many new terms have emerged. This volume adds many of the new terms used in criminal court cases, forensic entomology, forensic psychiatry, crime scene reconstruction, and other forensic disciplines. The definitions and accompanying illustrations come from various domains including toxicology, drug chemistry, criminalistics, bioscience/DNA, firearms/ballistics, forensic pathology, and the legal system. The illustrations communicate the use of laboratory instruments, investigative techniques, and laboratory methods of analysis. These detailed definitions and illustrations are valuable references to students and nonscientific professionals including police investigators interpreting lab reports, court reporters, prosecutors and defense attorneys preparing for trial.About the AuthorJohn C. Brenner earned a B.S. in Health Care Administration from the University of Southern Illinois while serving full time in the U.S. Navy. Upon completion of his naval career he received an MS in Forensic Science from the University of New Haven. He is a member of the Northeastern Association of Forensic Scientists (NEAFS). Mr. Brenner has spent 20 years as a forensic scientist with the New York State Police, and is trained in toxicology, serology, and DNA analysis. While providing testimony for more than 160 criminal court cases including homicides, rapes, blood assaults, burglaries, and DWIs, the author developed the idea for the first book, Forensic Science Glossary.Creating Forensic Science - An Illustrated Dictionary is one way of giving something back to the forensic community for the knowledge and experience he has gained working in the field of forensics.

Folsom New Archaeological Investigations of a Classic Paleoindian Bison Kill
Folsom: New Archaeological Investigations of a Classic Paleoindian Bison Kill By David J. Meltzer
2006 | 389 Pages | ISBN: 0520246446 | PDF | 6 MB
Well David J. Meltzer is a Phd, and I am just an average joe who loves archaeology, especially north American archaeology. The two "five-hundred pound" gorillas in north American prehistory are Clovis and Folsom "cultures". Most folks focus more on Clovis as it is deemed earlier. However, comparing Clovis and Folsom dart points, which about all the physical remains of their culture, Folsom to me at least is more delicate, more difficult to knap/produce, and the Folsom people have always fascinated me. Dr. Meltzer produced a long needed volume on Folsom, trying to bridge the gap and appeal to the average Joe on the street who is interested in this stuff, and the professionals who understand the archaeological lexicon. Meltzer interjects some light hearted humor into his writing, and makes at least part of the book easy enough to understand, that I did enjoy it and come away with a better understanding of not only the Folsom culture, but the archaeologists who excavated it in the mid 1920s, up to the most recent excavations in the 1990s. There are a lot of graphs and charts and listings of various detailed information that will only appeal to professionals, but all in all, I felt the book was worth my time and money. Dr. Meltzer does on occasion tend to drift into the complex wording that only trained professional archaeolgists and geologists will understand, and occasionally state things in ways that could have been much more simple. To quote Mr. Forrest Fenn, an artifact collector and amateur/vocational archaeolgist of NM: "1. I am born of you and am nourished by your lectures, your reports, and your beautiful museum displays. Thank you for giving me life. 2. Leave the jargon at home. Your future depends on increased public interest, and that's where your future funding will originate. If 14-year-old students don't understand your report, you're doing it wrong. And incidentally, color in books is OK. 3. Stop whining about what amateurs are doing. You have bigger problems at home, like unreported field work, for starters. 4. Collectors are not going away, and you're heavily outnumbered. Get used to it and learn from them. 5. Don't get carried away with your importance. Private property rights come first, now and always. 6. If it's a Canis Latrans bone, give us a break; say it's part of a coyote. 7. Your peers already know you're smart, so write for the rest of us sometime. We'll buy your book and read it; they probably won't "The above quote of Mr. Fenn, are words all professional archaeolgists should read, and hopefully heed. We surface collectors and armchair archys, really love this stuff, so keep writing and don't forget point number 6! Thanks for a great book!
