Other Minds How Humans Bridge the Divide between Self and Others
Other Minds: How Humans Bridge the Divide between Self and Others By Bertram F. Malle PhD, Sara D. Hodges
2005 | 369 Pages | ISBN: 1593851871 | PDF | 2 MB
One of the great challenges of social cognitive science is to understand how we can enter, or "read," the minds of others--that is, infer complex mental states such as beliefs, desires, intentions, and emotions. This book brings together leading scholars from psychology, neuroscience, and philosophy to present cutting-edge theories and empirical findings on this essential topic. Written in an engaging, accessible style, the volume examines the cognitive processes underlying mindreading; how interpersonal understanding and empathy develop across the lifespan; connections to language, communication, and relationships; and what happens when mindreading fails, in both normal and clinical populations.

No bull investing straightforward advice to maximize your returns in any market, with any amount ...
No bull investing: straightforward advice to maximize your returns in any market, with any amount of money By Jake Bernstein
2003 | 223 Pages | ISBN: 0793162742 | PDF | 3 MB
A small book that is easy to read and is an okay starting place for beginners despite the fact that Bernstein conveniently makes a lot of recommendations for his own books. There's a little of everything, money management, what you should expect to make during your first years as an investor, a little technical analysis, some nice rules of thumb, etc. But this is also the book's weakness--it spreads itself thin covering a lot of topics in this short introductory book. For example, only elementary momentum analysis is explained and a beginning investor should have more information than that to start investing. There are better "starter" books and readers of No Bull Investing should be aware that they can pick up a lot of simple tips and rules from Bernstein, but should continue their education before diving into investing.

Neuroscience of Psychoactive Substance Use and Dependence By World Health Organization
2004 | 286 Pages | ISBN: 9241562358 | PDF | 3 MB
Neuroscience of Psychoactive Substance Use and Dependence provides an authoritative summary of current knowledge of the biological basis of substance use behaviours, including their relationship with environmental factors. The report focuses on a wide range of psychoactive substances, including tobacco, alcohol and illicit drugs. New developments in neuroscience research are discussed (e.g., mechanisms governing craving, tolerance, neuroadaptation, immunotherapies and the concept of dependence) as well the ethical implications of these developments. As the product of consultations with and contributions from many international experts and partners, the best available evidence is provided from the various schools of thought and areas of research in the field of neuroscience. Neuroscience of Psychoactive Substance Use and Dependence is targeted at individuals with more than a basic knowledge of neuroscience, including scientists from a number of disciplines. It is expected that this publication will be of interest to health care workers, clinicians, social workers, university students, science teachers and informed policy makers.

Narrative Intelligence
Narrative Intelligence By Michael Mateas, Phoebe Sengers (Eds.)
2003 | 351 Pages | ISBN: 9027251711 | PDF | 3 MB
Narrative Intelligence (NI) - the confluence of narrative, Artificial Intelligence, and media studies - studies, models, and supports the human use of narrative to understand the world. This volume brings together established work and founding documents in Narrative Intelligence to form a common reference point for NI researchers, providing perspectives from computational linguistics, agent research, psychology, ethology, art, and media theory. It describes artificial agents with narratively structured behavior, agents that take part in stories and tours, systems that automatically generate stories, dramas, and documentaries, and systems that support people telling their own stories. It looks at how people use stories, the features of narrative that play a role in how people understand the world, and how human narrative ability may have evolved. It addresses meta-issues in NI: the history of the field, the stories AI researchers tell about their research, and the effects those stories have on the things they discover.
