An unflinching photographic record of the epic effects of a violent climate, from the earliest extinction events to the present.
Violent geologic events have ravaged the Earth since time began, spanning the vast eons of our planet's existence. These seismic phenomena have scored their marks in rock strata and been reflected in fossil records for future humanity to excavate and ponder. For most of the preceeding 78,000 years Homo sapiens simply observed natural climate upheaval. One hundred years ago, however, industrialization stunningly changed the rules, so that now most climate change is driven by us.

Empire of Care: Nursing and Migration in Filipino American History By Catherine Ceniza Choy
2003 | 251 Pages | ISBN: 082233089X | PDF | 2 MB
In western countries, including the United States, foreign-trained nurses constitute a crucial labor supply. Far and away the largest number of these nurses come from the Philippines. Why is it that a developing nation with a comparatively greater need for trained medical professionals sends so many of its nurses to work in wealthier countries? Catherine Ceniza Choy engages this question through an examination of the unique relationship between the professionalization of nursing and the twentieth-century migration of Filipinos to the United States. The first book-length study of the history of Filipino nurses in the United States, Empire of Care brings to the fore the complicated connections among nursing, American colonialism, and the racialization of Filipinos.Choy conducted extensive interviews with Filipino nurses in New York City and spoke with leading Filipino nurses across the United States. She combines their perspectives with various others-including those of Philippine and American government and health officials-to demonstrate how the desire of Filipino nurses to migrate abroad cannot be reduced to economic logic, but must instead be understood as a fundamentally transnational process. She argues that the origins of Filipino nurse migrations do not lie in the Philippines' independence in 1946 or the relaxation of U.S. immigration rules in 1965, but rather in the creation of an Americanized hospital training system during the period of early-twentieth-century colonial rule. Choy challenges celebratory narratives regarding professional migrants' mobility by analyzing the scapegoating of Filipino nurses during difficult political times, the absence of professional solidarity between Filipino and American nurses, and the exploitation of foreign-trained nurses through temporary work visas. She shows how the culture of American imperialism persists today, continuing to shape the reception of Filipino nurses in the United States.

Ludovico Dolce's Dialogo della pittura first appeared in Venice in 1557. L'Aretino, by which the work is known today, consists of a three-part dialogue between two Venetians, Aretino and Fabrini, on the particular merits of works of art and artists, including Michaelangelo, Raphael, and Donatello. It is based largely on Aretino's letters. The edition is presented in the original Italian with English facing-page translation. This study of early art criticism serves to reveal something of how aesthetics were judged based on classical sources (especially Aristotle) and contemporary writers like Vasari.

Dianna L. Stone, "Diversity and Inclusion in Organizations "
English | ISBN: 1648020046 | 2020 | 378 pages | PDF | 5 MB
It is evident that organizations are becoming increasingly diverse because of the growing numbers of ethnic minorities in the U. S. and the rise in immigration around the world (U. S. Bureau of Census, 2019). Some estimates indicate that by 2060 ethnic minorities in the U. S. will actually make up the majority of the population (U. S. Bureau of Census, 2019), and national minority group members will constitute over 14% of the 770 million people in the European Union (Worldwide Population Estimates, 2017). Thus, organizations around the world are faced with numerous challenges associated with attracting, motivating, and retaining employees who are culturally diverse, and we need a better understanding of how to increase the inclusion of diverse group members in organizations. This edited book includes twelve cutting edge articles written by subject matter experts on an array of topics including: (a) the influence of multiculturalism on HR practices, (b) factors affecting the success of corporate women, © stereotypes of racial minorities, (d) effect sizes in diversity research, ( e) true identities of stigmatized persons, (f) diversity training, (g) LGBTQ issues, (h) age, (I) strategies for creating inclusive climates, (j) the development of measure of reactions to perceived discrimination, (k) racial harassment, and (l) unfair discrimination against immigrants. This timely book provides a critical resource for undergraduate and graduate classes in diversity and inclusion in organizations, human resource management, organizational behavior, organizational sociology, and industrial and organizational psychology. Apart from theories and research on diversity and inclusion, the book also considers implications for designing HR policies and processes in organizations. Therefore, the book is especially relevant for practitioners and human resource professionals because it provides guidance on HR practices that can help organizations attract and retain these new organizational members.
