Postcommunism from Within Social Justice, Mobilization, and Hegemony
Postcommunism from Within: Social Justice, Mobilization, and Hegemony By Jan Kubik and Amy Linch (eds.)
2013 | 457 Pages | ISBN: 0814724264 | PDF | 5 MB
While the decline of communism in the late twentieth century brought democracy, political freedom, and better economic prospects for many people, it also produced massive social dislocation and engendered social problems that were far less pronounced under the old regimes. The fall of state socialism led to enormously complex political, economic, social, and cultural transformations, and while political liberalization was a lofty goal, it was neither uniform in its effects nor unqualified in its benefits. Postcommunism from Within foregrounds the diversity of the historical experiences and current realities of people in the postcommunist region in examining how they are responding to these monumental changes at home. The original essays in this volume lay out a bold new approach to research on the postcommunist region, and to democratization studies more broadly, that focuses on the social and cultural microprocesses behind political and economic transformation. Thematic essays by eminent scholars of postcommunism from across the social sciences are supported by case studies to demonstrate the limitations of current democratization paradigms and suggest ways of building categories of research that more closely capture the role of vernacular knowledge in demanding, creating, and adapting to institutional change. A novel approach to understanding one of the greatest political and social transformations in recent history, Postcommunism from Within explores not just how citizens respond to political and economic restructuring engineered at the top but also how people enact their own visions of life, politics, and justice by responding to daily challenges.

Plant Ethics Concepts and Applications
Angela Kallhoff, "Plant Ethics: Concepts and Applications "
English | ISBN: 1138079219 | 2018 | 250 pages | PDF | 2 MB
Large parts of our world are filled with plants, and human life depends on, interacts with, affects and is affected by plant life in various ways. Yet plants have not received nearly as much attention from philosophers and ethicists as they deserve. In environmental philosophy, plants are often swiftly subsumed under the categories of "all living things" and rarely considered thematically. There is a need for developing a more sophisticated theoretical understanding of plants and their practical role in human experience.

Performing Salome, Revealing Stories
Performing Salome, Revealing Stories By Clair Rowden (Editor)
2013 | 243 Pages | ISBN: 1409445674 | PDF | 5 MB
With its first public live performance in Paris on 11 February 1896, Oscar Wilde's Salome took on female embodied form that signalled the start of 'her' phenomenal journey through the history of the arts in the twentieth century. This volume explores Salome's appropriation and reincarnation across the arts - not just Wilde's heroine, nor Richard Strauss's - but Salome as a cultural icon in fin-de-siecle society, whose appeal for ever new interpretations of the biblical story still endures today. Using Salome as a common starting point, each chapter suggests new ways in which performing bodies reveal alternative stories, narratives and perspectives and offer a range and breadth of source material and theoretical approaches. The first chapter draws on the field of comparative literature to investigate the inter-artistic interpretations of Salome in a period that straddles the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the Modernist era. This chapter sets the tone for the rest of the volume, which develops specific case studies dealing with censorship, reception, authorial reputation, appropriation, embodiment and performance. As well as the Viennese premiere of Wilde's play, embodied performances of Salome from the period before the First World War are considered, offering insight into the role and agency of performers in the production and complex negotiation of meaning inherent in the role of Salome. By examining important productions of Strauss's Salome since 1945, and more recent film interpretations of Wilde's play, the last chapters explore performance as a cultural practice that reinscribes and continuously reinvents the ideas, icons, symbols and gestures that shape both the performance itself, its reception and its cultural meaning.

Pedorthics 101 Let's Talk about Your Feet Root Cause of Foot Problems How to Eliminate the Cause Anklebone Alignment
Pedorthics 101 Let's Talk about Your Feet: Root Cause of Foot Problems How to Eliminate the Cause Anklebone Alignment By Inna Chon; Kate Erb
2017 | 126 Pages | ISBN: 1947142011 | EPUB | 12 MB
An ABC certified pedorthist who used to be an animator at Walt Disney Feature Animation Studio writes this book. Animators know how to analyze the movement with weight and ground reaction force. With simple analysis of the law of physics, this book demonstrates how your foot arches are falling each step you take; and why orthotics are essential devices in order to align your ankle bones, thus provide true balance for your feet. With nearly 200 illustrations, this book shows the foot structure and its mechanics, and how your body is connected to the ankle bones that are part of the arches. With the facts that your legs stand right on the ankle bones and the arches falling each step you take, thus tilting the ankle bones; this book demonstrates how these fallen arches cause foot deformities and pains while misaligning our body's major joints that stand on the ankle bones. Also, this book demonstrates how the orthotics that align your ankle bones can prevent and improve fallen arch syndromes all over your body; and most importantly, how to test your ankle bone alignment and how to stand and walk correctly. With aligned anklebones, your body will move more efficiently in every activity, at work or in sports, while minimizing injuries.
