Peep-Machine Pin-Ups 1940s-1950s Mutoscope Art
Peep-Machine Pin-Ups: 1940s-1950s Mutoscope Art By Don Preziosi, Tina Skinner
2006 | 66 Pages | ISBN: 0764325116 | PDF | 50 MB
Machines called Mutoscopes offered quick shows for a penny from 1895 until as late as the 1970s, flipping cards to create the impression of a "moving picture." Associated with amusement piers and parks, and men's restrooms, these machines were notorious as proprietors of cheap peeps. During the 1940s, the International Mutoscope Reel Company began to manufacture coin-operated vending machines that served up 5-1/4" x 3-1/4"cards for collectors, usually of "pin-up" material. These cards are widely collected today, and a wonderful source of inspiring low-brow artwork. This comprehensive collection of more than 250 images includes work by noted artists Zoe Mozert, Earl Moran, and Gil Elvgren, among many other signed and unsigned, talented portrayors of the female form. A value guide will assist collectors.

Opportunity Denied Limiting Black Women to Devalued Work
Opportunity Denied: Limiting Black Women to Devalued Work By Enobong Branch
2011 | 208 Pages | ISBN: 0813551234 | PDF | 1 MB
Blacks and Whites. Men and Women. Historically, each group has held very different types of jobs. The divide between these jobs was stark-clean or dirty, steady or inconsistent, skilled or unskilled. In such a rigidly segregated occupational landscape, race and gender radically limited labor opportunities, relegating Black women to the least desirable jobs.Opportunity Deniedis the first comprehensive look at changes in race, gender, and women's work across time, comparing the labor force experiences of Black women to White women, Black men and White men. Enobong Hannah Branch merges empirical data with rich historical detail, offering an original overview of the evolution of Black women's work. From free Black women in 1860 to Black women in 2008, the experience of discrimination in seeking and keeping a job has been determinedly constant. Branch focuses on occupational segregation before 1970 and situates the findings of contemporary studies in a broad historical context, illustrating how inequality can grow and become entrenched over time through the institution of work.

Oil and the Great Powers Britain and Germany, 1914 to 1945
Oil and the Great Powers: Britain and Germany, 1914 to 1945 by Anand Toprani
English | June 4, 2019 | ISBN: 0198834608 | PDF | 336 pages | 10.5 MB
The history of oil is a chapter in the story of Europe's geopolitical decline in the twentieth century. During the era of the two world wars, a lack of oil constrained Britain and Germany from exerting their considerable economic and military power independently. Both nations' efforts to restore the independence they had enjoyed during the Age of Coal backfired by inducing strategic over-extension, which served only to hasten their demise as great powers.
