Meeting China Halfway How to Defuse the Emerging US-China Rivalry
Meeting China Halfway: How to Defuse the Emerging US-China Rivalry By Lyle Goldstein
2015 | 400 Pages | ISBN: 1626161607 | PDF | 3 MB
Though a US-China conflict is far from inevitable, major tensions are building in the Asia-Pacific region. These strains are the result of historical enmity, cultural divergence, and deep ideological estrangement, not to mention apprehensions fueled by geopolitical competition and the closely related "security dilemma." Despite worrying signs of intensifying rivalry between Washington and Beijing, few observers have provided concrete paradigms to lead this troubled relationship away from disaster. Meeting China Halfway: How to Defuse the Emerging US-China Rivalry is dramatically different from any other book about US-China relations. Lyle J. Goldstein's explicit focus in almost every chapter is on laying bare both US and Chinese perceptions of where their interests clash and proposing new paths to ease bilateral tensions through compromise. Each chapter contains a "cooperation spiral"―the opposite of an escalation spiral―to illustrate the policy proposals. Goldstein not only parses findings from the latest American scholarship but also breaks new ground by analyzing hundreds of Chinese-language sources, including military publications, never before evaluated by Western experts. Goldstein makes one hundred policy proposals over the course of this book, not because these are the only solutions to arresting the alarming course toward conflict, but rather to inaugurate a genuine debate regarding cooperative policy solutions to the most vexing problems in US-China relations.

Mandarin Competence of Chinese-English Bilingual Preschoolers
Hock Huan Goh, "Mandarin Competence of Chinese-English Bilingual Preschoolers: A Corpus-based Analysis of Singaporean Children's Speech"
English | 2016 | pages: 266 | ISBN: 9811022232 | PDF | 2,0 mb
This book provides readers with a detailed sketch of the Mandarin competence of Chinese children in Singapore from different home language backgrounds. Their Mandarin competence is defined in terms of lexical diversity, syntactic complexity and code-switching tendency. The findings presented show that there are statistical differences in lexical diversity and syntactic complexity among the compared groups of children, and these differences in linguistic competence were found to be positively correlated to increased Mandarin exposure at home. They also demonstrate that there are statistical differences in code-switching tendency among the groups of children compared, which were found to be negatively correlated to increased exposure to Mandarin at home. A general relationship between home language exposure and Mandarin competence was established, although this relationship was found to be volatile, especially among children who are more bilingually exposed. This book shares these findings with linguists, language educators, and language policymakers, both local and international.

Managing for Responsibility
Radha R. Sharma, "Managing for Responsibility"
English | ISBN: 1631572881 | 2015 | 160 pages | PDF | 12 MB
The cascading effect of globalization in the form of changing business environment, economic uncertainties and economic meltdown have brought about a plethora of unprecedented challenges before industry and organizations across the globe in recent years. Management education which prepares human capital for the industry jobs is expected to address these challenges along with intensifying competition, advancing technology, increasing workforce diversity and accelerating complexity. But the current management education is largely based on traditional capitalism where the focus is on profits and competitiveness rather than on a balance among profitability, social accountability and sustainability. The corporate scandals, scams and global meltdown and their repercussions on people, organizations, and countries in this interconnected world have created a compelling case for rethinking of management education. Consequently, management education in general and MBA education, in particular, need to adopt a paradigm shift in its knowledge generating (research) system, knowledge dissemination (teaching/training) system and knowledge utilization (learning/consulting/industry projects) system to be responsible and sustainable. Globalization has made the managerial role transnational where managers work, interact or conduct business with people across geographies; therefore, every manager needs to have knowledge of internationally recognized standards/practices to be able to conduct business with responsibility. This textbook Managing for Responsibility provides an alternative paradigm for management education written from an academic as well as practitioners perspective.
