Principles of Biophotonics, Volume 2 Light emission, detection, and statistics
English | 2019 | ISBN: 075031642X | 702 pages | True (PDF,EPUB,MOB) | 46.3 MB
Principles of Biophotonics, volume two describes detection and statistical representation of optical fields. Beginning by placing the visible spectrum in the context of the electromagnetic frequency range, this presentation stresses how thin of a sliver is normally called the optical spectrum. To be able to describe properties of light with technical accuracy, the most common radiometric quantities are introduced, and conversion to photon-based quantities is explicitly presented. For completeness, an analogy to the photometric quantities is also made. Additionally, this volume covers the three fundamental mechanisms for generating light: blackbody radiation, fluorescence and laser emission, as well as emphasizing the specific properties of each type of radiation, especially in terms of the optical power spectrum. Each chapter contains a set of practice problems and additional references, and this book aims to build the foundation for further study in subsequent volumes.

Practical Hadron Collider Physics
English | 2022 | ISBN: 0750324422 , 978-0750324427 | 509 pages | True PDF | 32.75 MB
Practical Collider Physics provides a self-contained summary of all of the necessary theoretical, experimental and statistical knowledge required to analyse hadron collider data, focussing on the skills and techniques that are rarely covered in standard textbooks. It covers topics including parton distribution functions, resummation, parton showers, hadronisation, and the underlying event and jet algorithms, all of which are vital for understanding the form and function of Monte Carlo generators. A detailed overview of the ATLAS and CMS detectors is also provided, along with their object-reconstruction algorithms, followed by a pedagogical introduction to computing and data-processing approaches, data-analysis basics, and detailed methods for high-precision measurements and particle searches. This book is appropriate for honours-level undergraduates and masters students, as well as supporting taught-course and practical aspects of a PhD in particle physics.Key Features Provides a detailed reference on current LHC analysis techniquesCovers all of the necessary theoretical, experimental and statistical knowledge required to perform a complete hadron collider data analysisA unique collaboration between particle experimentalists and theoristsCovers complex topics at a level that makes it accessible to final year undergraduate students

Philosophy and Climate Change (Engaging Philosophy)
English | 2021 | ISBN: 0198796285 | 425 pages | True PDF EPUB | 5.01 MB
Climate change is poised to threaten, disrupt, and transform human life, and the social, economic, and political institutions that structure it. Philosophy and Climate Change argues that understanding climate change, and discussing how to address it, should be at the very center of our public conversation. It shows that philosophy can make an enormous contribution to that conversation, but only if both philosophers and non-philosophers understand what it can

Pest Management in Cotton A Global Perspective
English | 2022 | ISBN: 9781800620216 | 308 pages | True PDF | 12.71 MB
This book presents a global overview of the background to, and the current state of, crop protection and pest management in cotton crops. Cotton is one of the most economically important crops in the world and has been grown for centuries but maintaining high yields of good quality requires sophisticated approaches to pest management. The introduction and use of pesticides over the decades significantly increased cotton yields but lead to many adverse environmental impacts. Over time, new and alternative insecticides were developed but overuse has enabled pests to develop significant resistance. The development of genetically modified cotton varieties with toxins derived from Bacillus thuringiensis enabled much improved control of lepidopteran larvae, including bollworms, but as the toxins had no effect on sucking pests, farmers had no choice but to continue using insecticides. Also, some of the new cotton varieties developed in recent times have not adapted to different climatic conditions and the quality of cotton fibre declined as a result. This book shows the need for more research to select cotton varieties with high quality fibres suitable for different cotton growing areas and to develop integrated pest management strategies to minimise the use of pesticides. It also demonstrates the need for an inter-disciplinary approach bringing together plant breeders, entomologists, plant pathologists, agronomists and agricultural engineers to achieve high yields of high quality cotton.

Permanent Markers Race, Ancestry, and the Body After the Genome
English | 2021 | ISBN: 146966514X | 273 pages | True PDF EPUB | 23.48 MB
Over the past twenty years, DNA ancestry testing has morphed from a niche market into a booming international industry that encourages members of the public to answer difficult questions about their identity by looking to the genome. At a time of intensified interest in issues of race and racism, the burgeoning influence of corporations like AncestryDNA and 23andMe has sparked debates about the commodification of identity, the antiracist potential of genetic science, and the promises and pitfalls of using DNA as a source of "objective" knowledge about the past.
