New horizons in Bon studies By Samten Gyaltsen Karmay; Yasuhiko Nagano; Kokuritsu Minzokugaku Hakubutsukan
2004 | 748 Pages | ISBN: 8186561013 | PDF | 18 MB
Bon is one of the pre Buddhist religions of Tibet. It has been defined in a variety of ways but regardless of how we define it we can properly say that its culture has penetrated Tibetan culture from ancient times to the present day. For our deeper understanding of Tibetan culture Bon is thus indispensable. This volume is a part of the results of the International Symposium entitled New Horizons in Bon Studies held in 1999 at the National Museum of Ethnology Osaka Japan. The purpose of this symposium was to discuss the Bon related themes from all aspects such as anthropology folklore Buddhist studies religious studies cosmology philology and linguistics to establish interfaces among various disciplines and to construct a common groundwork for the Bon studies. The edited fruits of the symposium are shown in this book which are categorized as Bon and its relationship to Buddhism rDzogs chen myths and rituals social and anthropological approach to the Bonpo monasteries and their lay communities and above all Bon in a more wider context. The linguistic studies on Zhangzhung and related Himalayan languages will separately appear as the next issue of this series
David Listokin, Dorothea Berkhout, James W. Hughes, "New Brunswick, New Jersey: The Decline and Revitalization of Urban America"
English | 2016 | ISBN: 0813575141 | PDF | pages: 296 | 107.9 mb
While many older American cities struggle to remain vibrant, New Brunswick has transformed itself, adapting to new forms of commerce and a changing population, and enjoying a renaissance that has led many experts to cite this New Jersey city as a model for urban redevelopment. Featuring more than 100 remarkable photographs and many maps, New Brunswick, New Jersey explores the history of the city since the seventeenth century, with an emphasis on the dramatic changes of the past few decades.Using oral histories, archival materials, census data, and surveys, authors David Listokin, Dorothea Berkhout, and James W. Hughes illuminate the decision-making and planning process that led to New Brunswick's dramatic revitalization, describing the major redevelopment projects that demonstrate the city's success in capitalizing on funding opportunities. These projects include the momentous decision of Johnson & Johnson to build its world headquarters in the city, the growth of a theater district, the expansion of Rutgers University into the downtown area, and the destruction and rebuilding of public housing. But while the authors highlight the positive effects of the transformation, they also explore the often heated controversies about demolishing older neighborhoods and ask whether new building benefits residents. Shining a light on both the successes and failures in downtown revitalization, they underscore the lessons to be learned for national urban policy, highlighting the value of partnerships, unwavering commitment, and local leadership.Today, New Brunswick's skyline has been dramatically altered by new office buildings, residential towers, medical complexes, and popular cultural centers. This engaging volume explores the challenges facing urban America, while also providing a specific case study of a city's quest to raise its economic fortunes and retool its economy to changing needs.

Srinivas S. Somanchi, "Natural Killer Cells: Methods and Protocols"
English | 2016 | pages: 383 | ISBN: 1493936824 | PDF | 12,7 mb
This volume contains collection of Natural Killer Cell methodologies relevant for both basic and translational research. These methodologies present new developments in the natural killer (NK) cell field, such as understanding the influence of NK cells metabolism on its function, identifying complexity of NK cell subsets through mass cytometry, and determining the emergence of memory NK cells in murine model of MCMV infection. Methods that study NK cell migration and cytotoxicity through endpoint analysis or live single cell imaging are also discussed. Chapters also describe methods pertaining to translational application of NK cells, such asex vivoexpansion of NK cells on K562 cell lines genetically modified to express either membrane bound IL-15 or membrane bound IL-21, large scale NK cell culture, current techniques for engineering NK cells to express chimeric antigen receptors or chemokine receptors usingretroviral vectors, electroporation of mRNA, and the natural phenomenon of trogocytosis.Written in the highly successfulMethods in Molecular Biologyseries format, these chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls.
National Intellectual Capital and the Financial Crisis in Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, and Poland By Carol Yeh-Yun Lin, Leif Edvinsson, Jeffrey Chen, Tord Beding (auth.)
2014 | 119 Pages | ISBN: 1461480175 | PDF | 5 MB
In the first decade of the twenty-first century, the biggest event of worldwide proportion was the 2008 global financial crisis, which was caused primarily by ineffective governance, failed surveillance systems, and implementation flaws. While fiscal and monetary policies succeeded in pulling many countries out of a financial freefall, most economies have performed beneath pre-recession levels as governments continued to struggle with their finances. Examining the financial crisis from the viewpoint of intangible assets provides a different perspective from traditional economic approaches. National Intellectual Capital (NIC), comprised mainly of human capital, market capital, process capital, renewal capital, and financial capital, is a valuable intangible asset and a key source of national competitive advantage in today's knowledge economy. The authors-pioneers in the field-present extensive data and a rigorous conceptual framework to analyze the connections between the global financial crisis and NIC development. Covering the period from 2005 to 2010 across 48 countries, the authors establish a positive correlation between NIC and GDP per capita and consider the impact of NIC investment for short-term recovery and long-term risk control and strategy formulation. Each volume in a series of SpringerBriefs on NIC and the financial crisis provides in-depth coverage of the impact of the crisis, the aftermath, future prospects, and policy implications for a regional cluster. This volume focuses on Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, and Poland.

My Cuba Libre: Bringing Fidel Castro to Justice By George J. Fowler III
2013 | 278 Pages | ISBN: 0989715426 | EPUB | 2 MB
On January 1, 1959, nine-year-old George Fowler was awakened in his ancestral home by the sound of gunshots as Fidel Castro's army approached Havana, Cuba. His family fled to the United States to start new lives as Castro established a brutal regime in their beloved country. As chief legal counsel for the Cuban American National Foundation, Fowler has dedicated his life to the cause of Cuban freedom. My Cuba Libre is the very personal story of his lifelong battle to remove the dictator from power and bring democracy to his homeland. Fowler exposes the monstrous actions of the Communist Party of Cuba and makes a firm case for indicting Castro for crimes against humanity. Fowler also provides a first-hand account of events like the Elián González case, the Brothers to the Rescue shoot down, and Cuban embargo negotiations. With boldness and courage, My Cuba Libre attacks the status quo that has allowed Castro to remain on the world stage--and makes a powerful argument for immediate change. "I write to raise awareness of our struggle, to convince the world to take action. Fidel Castro cannot be allowed to spend his final years in luxury and power. Whoever becomes his successor after his death will only continue his legacy of bloodshed, cruelty, and hate. We must act now to bring freedom to the people of Cuba."
