Preserving Neighborhoods How Urban Policy and Community Strategy Shape Baltimore and Brooklyn
Preserving Neighborhoods: How Urban Policy and Community Strategy Shape Baltimore and Brooklyn by Aaron Passell
English | January 19, 2021 | ISBN: 0231194072 | 216 pages | PDF | 4.07 Mb
Historic preservation is typically regarded as an elitist practice. In this view, designating a neighborhood as historic is a project by and for affluent residents concerned with aesthetics, not affordability. It leads to gentrification and rising property values for wealthy homeowners, while displacement afflicts longer-term, lower-income residents of the neighborhood, often people of color.

Post-conflict Colombia and the Global Circulation of Military Expertise
Post-conflict Colombia and the Global Circulation of Military Expertise by Manuela Trindade Viana
English | EPUB | 2022 | 286 Pages | ISBN : 3030961028 | 0.5 MB
By challenging more common analyses that point to the existence of a "post-conflict scenario" in Colombia and those that resist the narrative of "success", both of which operate within the logic of presence/absence of violence, this book proposes instead that we think of "post-conflict" in terms of the transformation of the rules on the use of violence.

Policy Sectors in Comparative Policy Analysis Studies Volume Four
Iris Geva-May, "Policy Sectors in Comparative Policy Analysis Studies: Volume Four "
English | ISBN: 1138332720 | 2019 | 494 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
Volume Four of the Classics of Comparative Policy Analysis, "Policy Sectors in Comparative Policy Analysis Studies" contains chapters concerned with comparison within disciplinary policy sectors. The volume contains detailed analyses of policies within six major policy sectors, and illustrates the important differences that exist across policies healthcare, environment, education, social welfare, immigration, and science and technology. The reader will find some common aspects and dimensions - theoretical or methodological - across all policy domains, as well as differences dictated by the characteristics of the discipline or the locus in which the policy point at issue takes place. Indeed, some scholars have argued that the differences and similarities that exist across and within policy sectors can transcend the differences or similarities across political systems.

Planning for Coexistence Recognizing Indigenous rights through land-use planning in Canada and Australia
Libby Porter, "Planning for Coexistence?: Recognizing Indigenous rights through land-use planning in Canada and Australia"
English | ISBN: 1409470776 | 2016 | 222 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
Planning is becoming one of the key battlegrounds for Indigenous people to negotiate meaningful articulation of their sovereign territorial and political rights, reigniting the essential tension that lies at the heart of Indigenous-settler relations. But what actually happens in the planning contact zone - when Indigenous demands for recognition of coexisting political authority over territory intersect with environmental and urban land-use planning systems in settler-colonial states? This book answers that question through a critical examination of planning contact zones in two settler-colonial states: Victoria, Australia and British Columbia, Canada. Comparing the experiences of four Indigenous communities who are challenging and renegotiating land-use planning in these places, the book breaks new ground in our understanding of contemporary Indigenous land justice politics. It is the first study to grapple with what it means for planning to engage with Indigenous peoples in major cities, and the first of its kind to compare the underlying conditions that produce very different outcomes in urban and non-urban planning contexts. In doing so, the book exposes the costs and limits of the liberal mode of recognition as it comes to be articulated through planning, challenging the received wisdom that participation and consultation can solve conflicts of sovereignty. This book lays the theoretical, methodological and practical groundwork for imagining what planning for coexistence might look like: a relational, decolonizing planning praxis where self-determining Indigenous peoples invite settler-colonial states to their planning table on their terms.

Peptidomimetics Protocols
Peptidomimetics Protocols By Kristina Luthman, Susanna Borg, Uli Hacksell (auth.), Wieslaw M. Kazmierski (eds.)
1999 | 549 Pages | ISBN: 0896035174 | PDF | 40 MB
In Peptidomimetics Protocols, Wieslaw Kazmierski assembles a state-of-the-art collection of detailed synthetic procedures that lead to a variety of scaffolds, turn mimetics, peptide-bond replacements, and enzyme inhibitors. Topics range from syntheses of unusual amino acids, to the use of a variety of linear and heterocyclic scaffolds in place of the peptide backbone. Important chemical procedures and methods include the transient protection of charged peptides as neutral prodrugs for improved blood-brain penetration and the replacement of otherwise labile peptide bonds with heterocyclic rings, olefins and fluoroolefins, and ketomethylenes. Synthetic protocols towards the transition-state mimics and reactive "warheads," applicable in enzyme inhibitors, are also disclosed. Peptidomimetics Protocols is the first book devoted to the practical synthetic preparation of peptide mimetics. Written by both academic and industrial synthetic organic and medicinal chemists, this book provides highly practical synthetic procedures for the generation of key peptide mimetics, and so immediately becomes a must-have desk reference and guide for all medicinal and pharmaceutical chemists engaged in the discovery and development of pharmaceuticals today.

Patronage Politics in Egypt The National Democratic Party and Muslim Brotherhood in Cairo
Mohamed Fahmy Menza, "Patronage Politics in Egypt: The National Democratic Party and Muslim Brotherhood in Cairo "

Between the military takeover of 1952 and the collapse of the Mubarak regime in 2011, the political system of Egypt depended upon a variety of mechanisms and structures to establish and consolidate its powerbase. Among those, an intricate web of what could be described as 'patronage politics' emerged as one of the main foundations of these tools.

Patch-Clamp Analysis Advanced Techniques
Patch-Clamp Analysis: Advanced Techniques By Richard A. Levis, James L. Rae (auth.), Wolfgang Walz, Alan A. Boulton, Glen B. Baker (eds.)
2002 | 349 Pages | ISBN: 1588290131 | PDF | 3 MB
The use of the patch pipet has moved from a specialized to a mainstream method that can be combined with other techniques to perform complex and novel operations. In Patch-Clamp Analysis: Advanced Techniques, Wolfgang Walz and his colleagues bring together a team of leading academic researchers to describe in reproducible detail all the most important patch-clamp methods. Beginning with updated basic patch-clamp techniques, these hands-on experts present the newest developments, ranging from fast external solution switching and the switching of the pipet solution during recording, to the loose-patch, the perforated-patch, and the patch-cram detection technique. Coverage of these advanced techniques combines their molecular biology and imaging to produce the patch pipet with RT-PCR and fluorometric techniques. All the methods included describe the theoretical background, offer complete startup help, and provide tips on solving common problems and analyzing data. Comprehensive and highly practical, Patch-Clamp Analysis: Advanced Techniques surveys all the major applications that involve patch pipets and sets the stage for the emergence of today's new applications involving genomics, proteomics, and sophisticated imaging techniques.
