World War II: World War II History, Facts and Chronology by Juanita Guillen
English | 2022 | ISBN: N/A | ASIN: B0B6822RSL | 60 pages | EPUB | 4.77 Mb
World War II, also called Second World War, conflict that involved virtually every part of the world during the years 1939-45. The principal belligerents were the Axis powers-Germany, Italy, and Japan-and the Allies-France, Great Britain, the United States, the Soviet Union, and, to a lesser extent, China. The war was in many respects a continuation, after an uneasy 20-year hiatus, of the disputes left unsettled by World War I. The 40,000,000-50,000,000 deaths incurred in World War II make it the bloodiest conflict, as well as the largest war, in history.

Wai-yee Li, "Women and National Trauma in Late Imperial Chinese Literature"
English | 2014 | pages: 654 | ISBN: 0674492048 | PDF | 6,3 mb
The Ming-Qing dynastic transition in seventeenth-century China was an epochal event that reverberated in Qing writings and beyond; political disorder was bound up with vibrant literary and cultural production. Women and National Trauma in Late Imperial Chinese Literature focuses on the discursive and imaginative space commanded by women. Encompassing writings by women and by men writing in a feminine voice or assuming a female identity, as well as writings that turn women into a signifier through which authors convey their lamentation, nostalgia, or moral questions for the fallen Ming, the book delves into the mentality of those who remembered or reflected on the dynastic transition, as well as those who reinvented its significance in later periods. It shows how history and literature intersect, how conceptions of gender mediate the experience and expression of political disorder.

Sofia Pereswetoff-Morath, "Viking-Age Runic Plates: Readings and Interpretations"
English | 2019 | pages: 376 | ISBN: 9187403331 | PDF | 5,4 mb
The aim of this dissertation is to represent as clearly as possible the genre of Viking-Age runic plates by developing readings and interpretations of the inscriptions on the 46 metal plates with runes from the Viking Age known today. Several investigations of the runic plates have been conducted with a stereomicroscope for this purpose. On the basis of the new readings thus established, new interpretations have been proposed for the most problematic sections of the previously interpreted inscriptions. New interpretations are also offered for inscriptions on runic plates which have previously been considered non-lexical. As well as providing new readings and interpretations, this study has resulted in clarification of the relationship between the form and content of the inscriptions on the runic plates on the one hand and on their find circumstances and appearance on the other.
Andrew Zissos, "Valerius Flaccus' Argonautica, Book 1: A Commentary"
English | 2008 | pages: 516 | ISBN: 0199219494 | PDF | 13,9 mb
A text (with apparatus criticus), translation, and commentary, with introduction, of the first book of Valerius Flaccus' Argonautica, an unfinished Roman epic extending to eight books and several thousand lines, written in the Flavian period (69-96 CE). The commentary addresses both textual and semantic matters and broader questions of stylistics, poetics, thematics, and cultural context. Particularly close attention is paid to Valerius' choice of diction, his sophisticated use of figures and tropes, his often sly erudition, the recurring and strategic resort to subtle intertextual gestures, and, where appropriate, the reception of his work in later authors. The substantial introduction provides an overview of the poet and his poem.
