These Ragged Edges Histories of Violence Along the U.s.-mexico Border
Andrew J. Torget, "These Ragged Edges: Histories of Violence Along the U.s.-mexico Border "
English | ISBN: 1469668386 | 2022 | 408 pages | PDF | 46 MB
The U.S.-Mexico border has earned an enduring reputation as a site of violence. During the past twenty years in particular, the drug wars-fueled by the international movement of narcotics and vast sums of money-have burned an abiding image of the border as a place of endemic danger into the consciousness of both countries. By the media, popular culture, and politicians, mayhem and brutality are often portrayed as the unavoidable birthright of this transnational space. Through multiple perspectives from both sides of the border, the collected essays inThese Ragged Edgesdirectly challenge that idea, arguing that rapidly changing conditions along the U.S.-Mexico border through the nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first centuries have powerfully shaped the ebb and flow of conflict within the region. By diving deeply into diverse types of violence, contributors dissect the roots and consequences of border violence across numerous eras, offering a transnational analysis of how and why violence has affected the lives of so many inhabitants on both sides of the border.

There Was Another Country Popular Resistance, Resurrection or Betrayal of a People
John W. Forje, "There Was Another Country: Popular Resistance, Resurrection or Betrayal of a People"
English | ISBN: 9956552380 | 2021 | 680 pages | PDF | 13 MB
In this comprehensive, well-reasoned, critical, richly documented and boldly argued account on the Anglophone/Southern Cameroons/Ambazonia crisis, John Forje, a foremost scholar of identity politics in Cameroon, offers insightful explorations and explanations of histories and cultures of telling truth to power that have come to be associated with the people of the English-speaking region of Cameroon. The book offers realistic perspectives for the reinstitution of justice, equality, and democratic governance in a country of plenty but lavishing in endemic underdevelopment. Forje argues, among other things, that the current Anglophone crisis is the exhibition of one reality: that more than half-a-century after independence and unification, most Cameroonians are grossly disillusioned with their leaders. The country has had only two presidents since independence - Ahmadou Ahidjo and Paul Biya, with the latter occupying the presidency for 40 years since 1982 and counting. If something concrete is not undertaken now, the cleavages of division would widen to a dangerous end. Dark clouds hang over the future of the country. Uncertainty about national unity and stability is hardly a solid foundation for a country aspiring to be an emerging polity by 2035. There is an urgent need for a broader dimension of political dispensation in Cameroon. The book calls for proper soul-searching, critical analysis, and a new, comprehensive and visionary mindset to build a new country out of the ashes of the existing crumbling or failed polity. The need to re-rail Cameroon on the democratic train and on the path of sustainable development cannot be overemphasized.

The lost museum the Nazi conspiracy to steal the world's greatest works of art
The lost museum the Nazi conspiracy to steal the world's greatest works of art By Hector Feliciano
1997 | 278 Pages | ISBN: 0465041914 | PDF | 29 MB
The Lost Museum explores the Nazis' systematic confiscation of these artworks, focusing on the private collections of five families: Rothschild, Rosenberg, Bernheim-Jeune, David-Weill, and Schloss. The book is filled with private family photos of this art, some of which has never before been seen by the public, and it traces the fate of these works as they passed through the hands of top German officials, unscrupulous art dealers, and unwitting auction houses such as Christie's and Sotheby's. Many works were returned to their owners after the war, but thousands of them - and, in some cases, their owners - disappeared. Some of these lost artworks are tracked down in this book to their present-day locations in Europe and the United States. More than 2,000 of the works that were looted or sold to the Nazis found their way into French national museums, where they are labeled as "unclaimed." Still others can be found in Switzerland. Hector Feliciano spent more than seven years tracking down the story of this Nazi pillaging. Drawing on recently declassified documents, interrogation reports, detailed Nazi inventories, private family archives, museum catalogs, and dozens of interviews, Feliciano paints a vivid picture of a concealed international art trade with links in France, Germany, Switzerland, Great Britain, the former Soviet Union, and the United States - controversial disclosures that have provoked an ongoing debate in Europe.

The Unity of Public Law Doctrinal, Theoretical and Comparative Perspectives
The Unity of Public Law?: Doctrinal, Theoretical and Comparative Perspectives By Mark Elliott (editor), Jason NE Varuhas (editor), Shona Wilson Stark (editor)
2018 | 472 Pages | ISBN: 1509915184 | PDF | 5 MB
This major collection contains selected papers from the second Public Law Conference, an international conference hosted by the University of Cambridge in September 2016. The collection includes contributions by leading academics and judges from across the common law world, including senior judges from Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK. The contributions engage with the theme of unity (and disunity) from a number of perspectives, offering a rich panoply of insights into public law which significantly carry forward public law thinking across common law jurisdictions, setting the agenda for future research and legal development. Part 1 of the volume contains chapters which offer doctrinal and theoretical perspectives. Some chapters seek to articulate a unifying framework for understanding public law, while others seek to demonstrate the plurality of public law through the method of legal taxonomy. A number of chapters analyse whether different fields such as human rights and administrative law are merging, with others considering specific unifying themes or concepts in public law. The chapters in Part 2 offer comparative perspectives, charting and analysing convergence and divergence across common law systems. Specific topics include standing, proportionality, human rights, remedies, use of foreign precedents, legal transplants, and disunity and unity among subnational jurisdictions. The collection will be of great interest to those working in public law.

Robyn O'Brien is not the most likely candidate for an anti-establishment crusade. The Unhealthy Truth is both the story of how one brave woman chose to take on the system and a call to action that shows how each of us can do our part and keep our own families safe.
