Advanced Materials from Recycled Waste examines the structural components of waste and looks at how best to transform those waste materials into advanced materials that can be utilized for high-end applications. Sections explore what is meant by Waste – looking at what are the sources, types of waste, and the management techniques and three sections dealing with specific types of waste materials, including Industrial, Agricultural and Plastics/Polymers. Classification, characterization, utilization of, physical and mechanical properties, and design and development are explored for each of these materials. Each section concludes with a review of the challenges and future prospects for their utilization.
This book will be a vital resource for a broad audience interested in the reuse of waste materials, including materials scientists and materials engineers in industry involved in the recycling, reuse and reclamation of materials and industrial byproducts, and some more general environmental scientists and engineers involved in sustainable development.

Distributed energy technologies are gaining popularity nowadays; however, due to the highly intermittent characteristics of distributed energy resources, a larger penetration of these resources into the distribution grid network becomes of major concern. The main issue is to cope with the intermittent nature of the renewable sources alongside the requirements for power quality and system stability. Unlike traditional power systems, the control and optimization of complex energy systems comprising of wind, solar, thermal, and energy storage becomes difficult in many aspects, such as modelling, integration, operation, coordination and planning etc. This means that energy conversion as per the standards imposed by the energy market is unachievable without adequate control, management, and optimization.
This edited book serves as a resource for the engineers, scientists and professionals working on distributed energy systems. The book is an extensive collection of state-of-the-art studies on advanced control paradigms for complex energy systems, with emphasis on the optimization and management of the high penetration of distributed energy resources into power distribution networks. Readers will find the book inspiring and useful whilst carrying out their own research in distributed energy systems.

Addicted to Noise collects the best interviews, profiles, and essays Michael Goldberg has written during his forty-plus years as a journalist. From combative interviews with Frank Zappa and Tom Waits to essays on how Jack Kerouac influenced Bob Dylan and the lasting importance of San Francisco's first punk rock club, Goldberg, as novelist Dana Spiotta wrote, "shows us how consequential music can be."
Contained within these pages: interviews with Sleater-Kinney, Sonic Youth, Patti Smith, Lou Reed, Flipper, John Fogerty, Neil Young, and Rick James, along with profiles of Robbie Robertson, John Lee Hooker, James Brown, the Clash, Prince, Michael Jackson, the Flamin' Groovies, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, X, Laurie Anderson, Stevie Wonder, George Clinton, Devo, San Francisco punks Crime, and more.

This book argues that the moral quality of an act comes from the agent's inner states. By arguing for the indispensable relevance of intention in the moral evaluation of acts, the book moves against a mainstream, "objective" approach in normative ethics.
It is commonly held that the intentions, knowledge, and volition of agents are irrelevant to the moral permissibility of their acts. This book stresses that the capacities of agency, rather than simply the label "agent," must be engaged during an act if its moral evaluation is to be coherent. The author begins with an ontological argument that an act is a motion or a causing of change in something else. He argues that the source of an act's moral meaning is in the agent: specifically, what the agent, if aware of relevant facts around her, aims to accomplish. He then moves to a series of critical chapters that consider arguments for mainstream approaches to act evaluation, including Thomson's dismissal of the agent knowledge and volition requirements, Scanlon's arguments for a derivative relevance of intentions to permissibility, Frowe's "causal roles" of agents in the moral evaluation of acts, and Bennett's explicit defense of the objective approach. The book concludes by offering the author's preferred replacement for the objective approach, an Aristotelian-Thomist view of acts.

From molecular motors to bacteria, from crawling cells to large animals, active entities are found at all scales in the biological world. Active matter encompasses systems whose individual constituents irreversibly dissipate energy to exert self-propelling forces on their environment. Over the past twenty years, scientists have managed to engineer synthetic active particles in the lab, paving the way towards smart active materials. This book gathers a pedagogical set of lecture notes that cover topics in nonequilibrium statistical mechanics and active matter. These lecture notes stem from the first summer school on Active Matter delivered at the Les Houches school of Physics. The lectures covered four main research directions: collective behaviours in active-matter systems, passive and active colloidal systems, biophysics and active matter, and nonequilibrium statistical physics―from passive to active.

This book describes the rich and diverse realm of accreting binary systems, made up of a compact object such as a white dwarf, neutron star or black hole, orbiting a companion star. It details the nature, formation and evolution of accreting binaries, describing how extensive observations, accompanied by simulations, allow astronomers to better understand the energetic phenomena occurring in these intriguing systems. The book also describes how multimessenger astronomy is currently revolutionizing our view of these systems, adding gravitational waves, neutrinos and cosmic rays to the photon light we receive from them.
Aimed at graduate students and researchers, this book provides an introduction to the topic, first describing the astrophysical basics of both single and binary stars, before moving on to detail the different types of accreting binary systems such as cataclysmic variables (CVs), low-and high-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs/HMXBs), and peculiar binaries such as intermediate-mass X-ray binaries (IMXBs) and ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs), finishing up with a panorama of multi-messenger research.
