Democratic Vanguardism: Modernity, Intervention, and the Making of the Bush Doctrine By Michael Harland
2013 | 248 Pages | ISBN: 0739179691 | EPUB | 1 MB
The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, transformed the way in which Americans and their leaders viewed the world. The tragic events of that day helped give rise to a foreign policy strategy commonly referred to as the "Bush Doctrine." At the heart of this doctrine lie a series of claims about the need to encourage liberal democracy as the antidote to jihadist terrorism. President George W. Bush proclaimed in a variety of addresses that democracy now represented the "single surviving model" of political life to which all people aspired. In the course of making this argument, President Bush linked his policies to an overarching "teleology" of progress. This discourse suggested that the United States might use force to hasten the emergence of liberal norms and institutions in rogue states. With a sense of irony, some commentators soon referred to the Bush administration's position as "Leninist" because of its determination to bring about the so-called "end of history" today. Yet, surprisingly, these critics had little more to add. This book assesses in greater depth the Bush administration's claim to comprehend the purpose of historical progress. Developing a concept termed "democratic vanguardism," this study investigates the idea of liberal modernity, the role of the United States as a force for democracy, and the implications of using military intervention in the service of idealistic ends. It examines disputes among political theorists, public intellectuals, and elected statesmen that help to enrich our understanding of the United States' efforts under President Bush to bend history to its will.

Data-Driven Learning for the Next Generation: Corpora and DDL for Pre-tertiary Learners By Peter Crosthwaite
2019 | 254 Pages | ISBN: 1138388009 | PDF | 6 MB
Despite advancements in and availability of corpus software in language classrooms facilitating data-driven learning (DDL), the use of such methods with pre-tertiary learners remains rare. This book specifically explores the affordances of DDL for younger learners, testing its viability with teachers and students at the primary and secondary years of schooling. It features eminent and up-and-coming researchers from Europe, Asia, and Australasia who seek to address best practice in implementing DDL with younger learners, while providing a wealth of empirical findings and practical DDL activities ready for use in the pre-tertiary classroom. Divided into three parts, the volume's first section focuses on overcoming emerging challenges for DDL with younger learners, including where and how DDL can be integrated into pre-tertiary curricula, as well as potential barriers to this integration. It then considers new, cutting-edge innovations in corpora and corpus software for use with younger learners in the second section, before reporting on actual DDL studies performed with younger learners (and/or their teachers) at the primary and secondary levels of education. This book will appeal to post-graduate students, academics and researchers with interests in corpus linguistics, second language acquisition, primary and secondary literacy education, and language and educational technologies.
Data-Driven Iterative Learning Control for Discrete-Time Systems
English | 2022 | ISBN: 9811959498 | 245 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 35 MB
This book belongs to the subject of control and systems theory. It studies a novel data-driven framework for the design and analysis of iterative learning control (ILC) for nonlinear discrete-time systems. A series of iterative dynamic linearization methods is discussed firstly to build a linear data mapping with respect of the system's output and input between two consecutive iterations. On this basis, this work presents a series of data-driven ILC (DDILC) approaches with rigorous analysis. After that, this work also conducts significant extensions to the cases with incomplete data information, specified point tracking, higher order law, system constraint, nonrepetitive uncertainty, and event-triggered strategy to facilitate the real applications. The readers can learn the recent progress on DDILC for complex systems in practical applications. This book is intended for academic scholars, engineers, and graduate students who are interested in learning control, adaptive control, nonlinear systems, and related fields.
