Badri Narayan, "Culture and Emotional Economy of Migration Ed 2"
English | ISBN: 0367001195 | 2018 | 172 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
This book studies how the act of migration is a motivating constituent in the production of popular culture in both the homeland and the destination. It looks at the formations of cultures in the process of identity-making of approximately 200 million Indians scattered across the world, from colonial to contemporary times. The volume is an in-depth exploration of the flow of cultures and their interactions through a study of north Indian migrants who underwent two waves of emigration - from the Bhojpuri region to the Dutch colony of Suriname between 1873 and 1916 to work on sugar, coffee, cotton and cocoa plantations, and their descendants who moved to The Netherlands following the Surinamese independence in 1975. It compares this complex network of cultures among the migrants to the folk culture of the Bhojpuri region from where large-scale migration is still taking place. The work draws on archival records, secondary literature, folk songs, rare photographs, and extensive fieldwork across continents - the Bhojpuri region, Mumbai, Surat and Ghaziabad in India, and Suriname and The Netherlands.
Cultural Algorithms: Recent Advances (Engineering Optimization: Methods and Applications)
English | 2022 | ISBN: 9811946329 | 286 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 35 MB
This book covers the latest advances in Cultural Algorithms, their general framework, different variants, hybridized versions with other meta-heuristic and search techniques, and their applications. Cultural Algorithms are meta-heuristic numerical optimization techniques inspired by the bio-cultural evolutionary theory, in which both types of vertical and horizontal learning behaviors are modeled. The book includes well-briefed basics of optimization and theoretical backgrounds of Cultural Algorithms in its initial chapters and then discusses their applications in different branches of science and engineering. It provides detailed mathematical formulations and algorithmic pseudo-codes of hybridized, extended, and multi-population variants of cultural algorithms. The book will serve the research students, fellows, professors, and industry professionals to implement real-time applications of Cultural Algorithms.
Cuban fire: The story of Salsa and Latin jazz By Isabelle Leymarie
2002 | 408 Pages | ISBN: 0826455867 | PDF | 32 MB
This title tells the saga of popular music of Cuban origin, and its major artists from the 1920s to today. Afro-Cuban music derives its richness from the fusion of various cultures. On the island of tobacco, rum and coffee, the marriage of sacred and secular African musical genres with Spanish and French melodies has given rise to numerous genres which have gained international fame: son, rhumba, guaracha, conga, mambo, cha-cha-cha, pachanga, nueva timba. In the US, Cubans have settled alongside other Hispanic communities. In New York, the boogaloo, salsa and Latin jazz, created by musicians such as Machito, Dizzy Gillespie and Chano Pozo emerged from contact with Puerto Ricans and African-Americans, and the rhythms of Puerto Rico and Santo Domingo were integrated into salsa and Latin jazz.
