Metty Vargas Pellicer, "Invisible History: Growing Up Colored in Cape Charles, Virginia"
English | ISBN: 1647187249 | 2020 | 178 pages | EPUB | 5 MB
The book is a memoir about growing up Black in Cape Charles, Virginia on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake. It details the origin of the town as a railroad terminus and connecting to ferry barges across the Chesapeake Bay to Norfolk, through its golden age in the Jim Crow South and its decline with the ascendancy of automobiles and the building of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. Its rise again as a tourist destination in the past decade and how the fortunes of the town is chronicled, without acknowledgment of the role of the Black community, which was a robust and thriving parallel community, that evolved in response to the segregation of the Jim Crow South. Now the town is rising again as a tourist destination and replacing the Black section with White weekend second home owners, and the Black presence has considerably diminished. Without a recording of its history, its entire memory will be gone, as if it was never there at all.

Internet Communication By James W. Chesebro, David T. McMahan, Preston C. Russett
2014 | 400 Pages | ISBN: 1433123045 | PDF | 2 MB
This textbook examines the Internet as a communication system - the single most pervasive, involving, and global communication system ever created by human beings, with a host of political, economic, cognitive, and sociocultural implications. The Internet crosses all cultural boundaries and is the fastest growing global communication system ever witnessed. The text explores the ways in which the technology of the Internet, beyond its specific content, possesses its own message-generating capabilities that dramatically and decisively affect its users. Focusing on the power of media theories, the text explains, describes, interprets, and evaluates the Internet in insightful, useful, and thoughtful ways. The concepts, processes, functions, and outcomes of the Internet as a global communication technology are used as a way of testing the validity and reliability of media theories, and media theories are used as a way of identifying the powers and limitations of the Internet as a communication system. An overview of the Internet's past and anticipated future is provided

International Law and Time: Narratives and Techniques
English | 2022 | ISBN: 3031094646 | 876 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 5 MB
This book explores the close, complex and consequential- yet to a large extent implicit - relationship between international law and time. There is a conspicuous discrepancy between international law's technical preoccupation with the mechanics of temporal rules and the absence of more foundationalconsiderations of how time - both as an irrepressible physical dimension manifesting in the passage of time, and as a social construct shaped by diverse social and cultural factors - impacts and interacts with international law. Divided into five parts and 21 chapters, this book explores key aspects of the relationship between international law and time and puts the spotlight on time's fundamental significance for international law as a legal order and as a discipline. Pursuing diverse approaches to international law, the authors consider the notion, significance, manifestations, uses and implications of time in international law in a wide range of contexts, and offer insights into the various ways in which international law and international lawyers cope with time, both in terms of constructing narratives and in devising and employing particular legal techniques.
Intelligent and Fuzzy Techniques for Emerging Conditions and Digital Transformation: Proceedings of the INFUS 2021 Conference, held August 24-26, 2021. Volume 2 By Cengiz Kahraman; Selcuk Cebi; Sezi Cevik Onar; Basar Oztaysi; A. Cagri Tolga; Irem Ucal Sari
2021 | 897 Pages | ISBN: 3030855767 | PDF | 52 MB
This book presents recent research in intelligent and fuzzy techniques. Emerging conditions such as pandemic, wars, natural disasters and various high technologies force people for significant changes in business and social life. The adoption of digital technologies to transform services or businesses, through replacing non-digital or manual processes with digital processes or replacing older digital technology with newer digital technologies through intelligent systems is the main scope of this book. It focuses on revealing the reflection of digital transformation in our business and social life under emerging conditions through intelligent and fuzzy systems. The latest intelligent and fuzzy methods and techniques on digital transformation are introduced by theory and applications. The intended readers are intelligent and fuzzy systems researchers, lecturers, M.Sc. and Ph.D. students studying digital transformation. Usage of ordinary fuzzy sets and their extensions, heuristics and metaheuristics from optimization to machine learning, from quality management to risk management makes the book an excellent source for researchers.

Some people are cleverer than others. This everyday observation is the subject of an academic field that is often portrayed as confused and controversial, when in fact, the field of intelligence holds some of psychology's best-replicated findings.
