Boys' Love, Cosplay, and Androgynous Idols Queer Fan Cultures in Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan
Maud Lavin, Ling Yang, Jing Jamie Zhao, "Boys' Love, Cosplay, and Androgynous Idols: Queer Fan Cultures in Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan"
English | 2017 | ISBN: 9888390805 | PDF | pages: 292 | 7.3 mb
Chinese-speaking popular cultures have never been so queer in this digital, globalist age. The title of this pioneering volume, Boys' Love, Cosplay, and Androgynous Idols Queer Fan Cultures in Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan already gives an idea of the colorful, multifaceted realms the fans inhabit today. Contributors to this collection situate the proliferation of (often online) queer representations, productions, fantasies, and desires as a reaction against the norms in discourses surrounding nation-states, linguistics, geopolitics, genders, and sexualities. Moving beyond the easy polarities between general resistance and capitulation, Queer Fan Cultures explores the fans' diverse strategies in negotiating with cultural strictures and media censorship. It further outlines the performance of subjectivity, identity, and agency that cyberspace offers to female fans. Presenting a wide array of concrete case studies of queer fandoms in Chinese-speaking contexts, the essays in this volume challenge long-established Western-centric and Japanese-focused fan scholarship by highlighting the significance and specificities of Sinophone queer fan cultures and practices in a globalized world. The geographic organization of the chapters illuminates cultural differences and the other competing forces shaping geocultural intersections among fandoms based in Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.

Bound by Bondage Slavery and the Creation of a Northern Gentry
Nicole Saffold Maskiell, "Bound by Bondage: Slavery and the Creation of a Northern Gentry "
English | ISBN: 1501764241 | 2022 | 306 pages | PDF | 6 MB
During the first generations of European settlement in North America, a number of interconnected Northeastern families carved out private empires. In Bound by Bondage, Nicole Saffold Maskiell argues that slavery was a crucial component to the rise and enduring influence of this emergent aristocracy. Dynastic families built prestige based on shared notions of mastery, establishing sprawling manorial estates and securing cross-colonial landholdings and trading networks that stretched from the Northeast to the South, the Caribbean, and beyond. The members of this elite class were mayors, governors, senators, judges, and presidents, and they were also some of the largest slaveholders in the North. Aspirations to power and status, grounded in the political economy of human servitude, ameliorated ethnic and religious rivalries, and united once antagonistic Anglo and Dutch families, ensuring that Dutch networks endured throughout the English and then Revolutionary periods.

Blue Division Spanish Blood in Russia, 1941-1945
Blue Division: Spanish Blood in Russia, 1941-1945
English | 2015 | ISBN: 1845197372 | 569 Pages | PDF (True) | 6 MB
This book, translated from the original Spanish, is the primary academic and historical study of the Blue Division - a Falangist initiative involving the dispatch of some forty-thousand Spanish combatants (over a half of whom paid with their lives, health, or liberty) to the Russian Front during the Second World War. Xavier Moreno Juliá does not limit himself to relating their deeds under arms, but also analyses - for the first time - the political background in detail: the complex relations between the Spanish government and Hitler's Germany; the internal conflicts between the Falangists and the Army; the rise and fall of Franco's brother-in-law, Minister Ramón Serrano Suñer, who inspired the Blue Division and became the second most powerful person in Spain; and the attitude of General Agustín Muñoz Grandes, commander of the Blue Division, who was encouraged by Berlin to seriously consider the possibility of taking over the reins of Spanish power. In the end, there were 45,500 reasons that led to joining the Blue Division - one for each young man who decided to enlist. To understand all of the complex reasons behind their military service under German command is impossible at this juncture. It is an irrecoverable past that lies in Spanish cemeteries and on the Russian steppes. This book, based on massive documentation in German, British and Spanish archives, is an essential source of information to understand Spain in the 1940s - an epoch when the Caudillo's power and the regime's good fortune were less secure than is often believed. Published in association with the Cañada Blanch Centre for Contemporary Spanish Studies, LSE.
