Domination without Dominance Inca-Spanish Encounters in Early Colonial Peru
Gonzalo Lamana, "Domination without Dominance: Inca-Spanish Encounters in Early Colonial Peru"
English | 2008 | ISBN: 0822343118, 0822342936 | PDF | pages: 304 | 1.6 mb
Offering an alternative narrative of the conquest of the Incas, Gonzalo Lamana both examines and shifts away from the colonial imprint that still permeates most accounts of the conquest. Lamana focuses on a key moment of transition: the years that bridged the first contact between Spanish conquistadores and Andean peoples in 1531 and the moment, around 1550, when a functioning colonial regime emerged. Using published accounts and array of archival sources, he focuses on questions of subalternization, meaning making, copying, and exotization, which proved crucial to both the Spaniards and the Incas. On the one hand, he re-inserts different epistemologies into the conquest narrative, making central to the Description often-dismissed, discrepant stories such as books that were expected to talk and year-long attacks that could only be launched under a full moon. On the other hand, he questions the dominant image of a clear distinction between Inca and Spaniard, showing instead that on the battlefield as much as in everyday arenas such as conversion, market exchanges, politics, and land tenure, the parties blurred into each other in repeated instances of mimicry.

English | April 28, 2021 | ISBN: 1988025613 | 236 pages | PDF | 3.20 Mb
Nothing has rocked the foundations of the world, including the business world, more than the COVID- 19 pandemic. As businesses struggle and often flounder to cope, many business leaders are wondering how to deal with the unpredictable. How do you plan for something you can't predict? Strategist Lance Mortlock says you can, and you should. In this practical and accessible guide, Mortlock shows how scenario planning can identify risks and uncertainties, and predict a variety of different realities that will affect the future of any organization. He gives business leaders the tools to understand the forces emerging in a volatile, rapidly changing world so organizations are better prepared than their competitors to deal with them. This guide can be used by industries, the military, even governments, and, if executed properly, it will prepare leaders for every kind of unexpected challenge, from dramatic changes in commodity prices to wars and terrorist attacks and even pandemics. This book will help business leaders gain an earlier view of long-term forces that will affect their organizations performance, and be better prepared for future disasters on the scale of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Crowds The Stadium as a Ritual of Intensity
Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht, "Crowds: The Stadium as a Ritual of Intensity"
English | ISBN: 1503628833 | 2021 | 138 pages | PDF | 815 KB
Anyone who has ever experienced a sporting event in a large stadium knows the energy that emanates from stands full of fans cheering on their teams. Although "the masses" have long held a thoroughly bad reputation in politics and culture, literary critic and avid sports fan Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht finds powerful, as yet unexplored reasons to sing the praises of crowds. Drawing on his experiences as a spectator in the stadiums of South America, Germany, and the US, Gumbrecht presents the stadium as "a ritual of intensity," thereby offering a different lens through which we might capture and even appreciate the dynamic of the masses. In presenting this alternate view, Gumbrecht enters into conversation with thinkers who were more critical of the potential of the masses, such as Gustave Le Bon, Friedrich Nietzsche, Sigmund Freud, José Ortega y Gasset, Elias Canetti, Siegfried Kracauer, T. W. Adorno, or Max Horkheimer. A preface explores college crowds as a uniquely specific phenomenon of American culture. Pairing philosophical rigor with the enthusiasm of a true fan, Gumbrecht writes from the inside and suggests that being part of a crowd opens us up to an experience beyond ourselves.
