Reconstructing the House of Culture Community, Self, and the Makings of Culture in Russia and Beyond
Brian Donahoe, Joachim Otto Habeck, "Reconstructing the House of Culture: Community, Self, and the Makings of Culture in Russia and Beyond"
English | 2011 | pages: 351 | ISBN: 0857452754 | PDF | 3,1 mb
Notions of culture, rituals and their meanings, the workings of ideology in everyday life, public representations of tradition and ethnicity, and the social consequences of economic transition― these are critical issues in the social anthropology of Russia and other postsocialist countries. Engaged in the negotiation of all these is the House of Culture, which was the key institution for cultural activities and implementation of state cultural policies in all socialist states. The House of Culture was officially responsible for cultural enlightenment, moral edification, and personal cultivation―in short, for implementing the socialist state's program of "bringing culture to the masses." Surprisingly, little is known about its past and present condition. This collection of ethnographically rich accounts examines the social significance and everyday performance of Houses of Culture and how they have changed in recent decades. In the years immediately following the end of the Soviet Union, they underwent a deep economic and symbolic crisis, and many closed. Recently, however, there have been signs of a revitalization of the Houses of Culture and a re-orientation of their missions and programs. The contributions to this volume investigate the changing functions and meanings of these vital institutions for the communities that they serve.

Laura J. Enríquez, "Reactions to the Market: Small Farmers in the Economic Reshaping of Nicaragua, Cuba, Russia, and China"
English | 2011 | ISBN: 0271036206, 0271036192 | PDF | pages: 251 | 12.6 mb
It is manifest in developing countries around the world that the "shock" therapy administered to their economies by the neoliberal model of structural adjustment has failed, leaving much social and economic destruction in its wake. In Latin America this failure has led to a resurgence of interest in alternative models, some of them deploying various versions of socialism, as in Bolivia, Chile, and Venezuela, which has given rise to talk about the new "pink tide" enveloping the region. In this comparative study of four economies that have been making a transition to the market from their orthodox socialist pasts, Laura Enríquez focuses our attention on the plight of the small farmer in particular and on the importance of this sector for the overall socioeconomic success of the transition.

English | ISBN: 1505466202 | 2014 | 198 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
"I was a youthful Zephyr, flying with the wind in my face, fleet of foot and bold of spirit. But 35 years later I have a sorrowful confession to make. I hate running." *sobbing* Follow Tony Markey's 30-day challenge to see if he can fall back in love with running. If you're a runner, you'll appreciate Tony's rookie challenges and surprising insights. If you're a non-runner, you'll appreciate his humor and the way he wrestles with motivation and focus. His 30-Day experiment starts with a firm set of rules and ends with running in the Seattle Half-marathon. For runners and non-runners alike, an enjoyable read with plenty of anecdotes to keep the narrative moving. "Markey gets through his 30-day experiment, huffing and puffing, but emerges a marathon runner...[Re-Run is] quick and easy, and along the way, the scenery is good, and the company is fun. In the long haul, he has created a 210-page metaphor for the attainment of any worthwhile goal, making Re-Run: My 30-Day Experiment to Fall Back in Love With Running a worthwhile read." - Linda Lee Greene(@llgreeneauthor) Tony Markey is a runner. Haha, just kidding. He's a hack. An absolute running hack. Not in a "life hack" way, but more like in a "hey slow guy, you suck!" way. He's an old fat guy that hopes that he doesn't have to be fat and slow forever. Still, he's not getting any younger. And he shares his collected wisdom so others can follow in his footsteps. Only not exactly in his footsteps, because that would take forever. Like, figuratively in his footsteps. Or like, in front of his footsteps. Tony lives near Seattle with his wife and three kids, one of which tolerates him. They take turns.
