Contributors include MSNBC commentator Paul Butler, who grapples with race and policing through the lens of N.W.A.'s song 'Fuck tha Police', ACLU President Deborah Archer, who considers the 2014 uprisings in Ferguson, Missouri, and many other prominent scholars who speak of poverty, LGBTQ+ rights, mass incarceration, and other crucial topics of the day. Written to 'say it plain', this collection will be valuable not only to students and scholars of law, African-American studies, and hip-hop, but also to everyone who cares about creating a more just society.

Faith and Certitude: Can We Be Sure of the Things that Matter Most to Us? By Thomas Dubay
1998 | 270 Pages | ISBN: 089870054X | EPUB | 1 MB
Fr. Thomas Dubay, S.M. The highly regarded Dubay (Fire Within) presents a thorough and concise analysis of the critical questions and issues concerning faith and certitude in our day. Written in a very readable, inspirational and sometimes humorous style, Dubay cuts through the relativism and skepticism of our time and exposes the deepest roots of error, whether scientific or religious. He shows how anyone committed to an honest search for truth and goodness can attain a rock solid religious certitude that will not be shaken by developments in human events and academic studies. "A masterful book. Fr. Dubay is one of the best writers in the Church today. He explains with striking imagery, and uses colorful language and readily grasped examples. One of the most important books of our time." -Fr. Richard Gilsdorf, Reflections "Highly recommended for apologetic purposes. It is well-written, easy to read and full of concrete examples." -Fr. Kenneth Baker, S.J., editor, Homiletic and Pastoral Review "This book should be mandatory reading to help restore a valid defense of the truths of the Faith. A brilliantly conceived tool with razor-edged logic." -St. Anthony Messenger Fr. Thomas Dubay, S.M., is a well-known retreat master and expert in the spiritual life. Ezekiel, Daniel By Kenneth Stevenson, Michael Glerup, Thomas C. Oden (editors)
2008 | 396 Pages | ISBN: 0830814833 | EPUB | 2 MB
The books of Ezekiel and Daniel are rich in imagery that is taken up afresh in the New Testament. Echoes of Ezekiel―with its words of doom and hope, vision of a new temple, and scroll-eating prophet―are especially apparent in the book of Revelation. Daniel is most notable in supplying terminology and imagery for Jesus of Nazareth's favored self-description as "Son of man," a phrase also found in Ezekiel. The four beasts of Daniel find their counterparts in the lion, ox, man, and eagle of Ezekiel and Revelation. It is no wonder these books, despite the difficulties in interpreting them, took hold on the imagination of the early church. In this Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture volume, over forty church fathers are cited in the commentary on Ezekiel, some of whom are here translated into English for the first time, but pride of place goes to four significant extant works: the homilies of Origen and Gregory the Great, and the commentaries of Jerome and Theodoret of Cyr, thus bridging East and West, North and South. A similar array of fathers are found within the commentary on Daniel. Extensive comments derive from the works of Theodoret of Cyr, Hippolytus, Jerome, and Isho'dad of Merv, providing a wealth of insight.

Muhammad Abdel Haleem, "Exploring the Qur'an: Context and Impact"
English | 2017 | ISBN: 1780763654 | EPUB | pages: 360 | 0.9 mb
The teachings, style and impact of the Qur'an have always been matters of controversy, among both Muslims and non-Muslims. But in a modern context of intercultural sensitivity, what the Qur'an says and means are perhaps more urgent questions than ever before. This major new book by one of the world's finest Islamic scholars responds to that urgency. Building on his earlier groundbreaking work, the author challenges misinterpretations of particular Qur'anic verses from whatever quarter. He addresses the infamous 'sword' verse, frequently cited as a justification for jihad. He also questions the 'tribute' verse, associated with the Muslim state subjugating Jews and Christians; and the idea of Paradise in the Qur'an, often viewed by the West as emphasising merely physical pleasures, or used by Islamic fighters as their just reward for holy war. The author argues that wrenching the verses out of the context of the whole has led to dangerous ideologies being built on isolated phrases which have then assumed afterlives of their own. This nuanced, holistic reading has vital interfaith ramifications.
