Survive the Bomb: The Radioactive Citizen's Guide to Nuclear Survival By Eric G. Swedin
2011 | 192 Pages | ISBN: 0760340315 | PDF | 22 MB
The launch of Russia's Sputnik satellite in 1957 began an era where American citizens were haunted by fears of annihilation. Baby Boomers will remember Bert the Turtle, who instructed them how to "duck and cover." "Survive the Bomb "documents other U.S. government efforts to calm the collective psyche with nuclear survival handouts. These cheerful and naive representations unintentionally inspired countless schoolchildren to question authority at an early age. This strange era reached its peak in 1962 with the Cuban Missile Crisis, lasting at least until the fall of the Berlin Wall. The nightmare still lingers today with the terrorist threat of dirty bombs and efforts by countries like Iran and North Korea to build their own nuclear arsenals. In addition to Civil Defense brochures and pamphlets from the period, "Survive the Bomb" includes: - Aftermath descriptions and casualty estimates at various distances from a nuclear blast- Civil Defense reports and recommendations to the United States Congress and President- Declassified nuclear wargame scenarios where the Department of Defense imagined the unimaginable- An introduction and commentaries by Cold War historian Eric G. Swedin

Suburbs: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions) by Carl Abbott
English | January 4th, 2023 | ISBN: 0197599249 | 160 pages | True EPUB | 2.07 MB
We live in the suburban era. Well over half of all Americans and two-thirds of Canadians live in suburbs. Tracts of suburban bungalows ring Sydney and Melbourne. Suburban apartments rise on the outskirts of Paris, Prague, Singapore, and Beijing. Nearly everyone has a strong opinion about suburbs. Folks who love dense cities scorn "suburbia," while people who like big yards dislike bustling sidewalks and subways. Social scientists argue whether contemporary suburbs are losing their luster or if a supposed back-to-the-city trend is a mirage-a debate that has been exacerbated by uncertainty over the effects of COVID-19.
Naamah Akavia, "Subjectivity in Motion: Life, Art, and Movement in the Work of Hermann Rorschach"
English | 2012 | pages: 211 | ISBN: 0415536235 | PDF | 2,0 mb
The motif of human movement has long been understood as central to Hermann Rorschach's strikingly innovative inkblot experiment. But owing to Rorschach's untimely death a year after publishing his famous work, Psychodiagnostics, the world has lacked an adequate understanding of how he came to put so much stress on human movement in his unique perceptual theory. Now historian Naamah Akavia changes that with her illuminating study of the intellectual and clinical development of this Swiss pioneer. Based on new archival researches and an unprecedented appreciation for Rorschach's milieu and his times, Subjectivity in Motion: Life, Art, and Movement in the Work of Hermann Rorschach is destined to become an instant classic in the history of psychology and psychiatry―and an important new contribution to our understanding of how movement figures in modernity generally. The historian will appreciate the intricate analysis of Rorschach's engagement with a wide variety of figures and movements ranging from Mourly Vold and Freud to Jung and Eugen Bleuler, from schizophrenia to Russian Futurism and Eurhythmics, from the word association experiment to the works of Alfred Kulbin and Ferdinand Hodler. But it is the psychologist who will benefit most profoundly from this richly detailed exploration, for the topic of human movement, how it is perceived, and how that figures in personality generally will never quite look the same again.

Studies on Old Kingdom Reliefs and Sculpture in the Hermitage: 67 (Agyptologische Abhandlungen) By Andrey O Bolshakov
2005 | 324 Pages | ISBN: 3447051841 | PDF | 10 MB
The book is the first complete publication of a relatively small but interesting collection of Old Kingdom monuments in the State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg. Twenty-two pieces are reproduced as black-and-white photographs and line drawings. Among them are two statues, fourteen reliefs and relief fragments, five offering stones and a fragment of an ointment tablet; several objects in museums of Cairo, Copenhagen, and Cambridge belonging to the same people are published as well. Most of these monuments were never published or are known only through books and periodicals in Russian that usually are not available in Egyptological libraries. Although the Hermitage pieces were acquired at antiquities dealers without any documentation, their modern history is traced and in a half of cases either their provenance is reconstructed or related monuments are found. A limited number of monuments allowed the author to discuss them to a much greater extent than it is common in museum publications and, thus, the book in spite of its structure of a catalogue virtually is a detailed study of various problems of Old Kingdom history and ideology.
