"The perspective of 15 years, painstaking research, thousands of interviews, extensive analysis and evaluation, and the creative talent of John Toland [paint] the epic struggle on an immense canvas. . . . Toland writes with the authority of a man who was there. . . . He tastes the bitterness of defeat of those who surrendered and writes as if he had the benefit of the eyes and ears of soldiers and generals on the other side of the line. . . . If you could read only one book to understand generals and GIs and what their different wars were like this is the book."-Chicago Sunday Tribune John Toland has written numerous books on World War II, including Infamy: Pearl Harbor and Its Aftermath. A Strange Campaign The Battle for Madagascar [Audiobook]
English | ASIN: B0959Z7VG1 | 2021 | 3 hours and 13 minutes |MP3|M4B | 104 MB
Madagascar provided the stunning backdrop for one of the strangest conflicts of the Second World War - when Britain went head to head against one of its closest allies. When British forces landed on the island in 1942, the enemy they faced wasn't German, Japanese, or even Italian, this time the opposing forces were French. Concerned that Japan might use Madagascar as a strategic base to disrupt the supply line to India, Britain was keen to take control of the island. However, the Vichy forces were keen to defend the French colony and prevent it becoming part of the British Empire.
A Strange Campaign: The Battle for Madagascar gives a detailed account of this fascinating, but little-known period of military history. Even at the time, the conflict was a controversial one, pitting two colonial empires against each other. However, it was also ground-breaking as it was the first time Allied forces had staged a major amphibious invasion. The lessons learned on the shores of Madagascar would prove to be invaluable two years later during the D-day landings in Normandy. Military historian Russell Phillips examines the tactics used in the battle for Madagascar, which included secret agents, dummy paratroopers and attempted bribery.

Art in Battle
Art in Battle By Frode Sandvik, Erik Tonning
2017 | 257 Pages | ISBN: 3838210646 | PDF | 11 MB
The exhibition Art in Battle at KODE - Art Museums of Bergen portrays the battles over art initiated by Nazi policies for their European conquests. It examines propaganda exhibitions in occupied Norway as well as hitherto unseen art by soldiers stationed in Norway. This exceptional catalog documents this ground-breaking show and assembles leading experts on the history and ideology of Nazi cultural campaigns in both Germany and Norway to initiate a fresh discussion of the relationships between center and periphery within the art worlds of the Third Reich outside the overfamiliar dichotomy of "Degenerate" versus "Great German" art. Beyond historical re-assessment, this project also asks more pressingly: How do we encounter these battles over art today?

Battle for the Bay The Naval War of 1812
Battle for the Bay: The Naval War of 1812 By Joshua M. Smith
2011 | 128 Pages | ISBN: 0864926448 | EPUB | 2 MB
As the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812 approaches, a new chapter in the history of the war is being opened for the first time. Although naval battles raged on the Great Lakes, combat between privateers and small government vessels boiled in the Bay of Fundy and the Gulf of Maine. Three small warships -- the Provincial sloopBrunswicker, His Majesty's schoonerBream, and His Majesty's brig of warBoxer-- played a vital role in defending the eastern waters of British North America in this crucial war.The crews of these hardy ships fought both the Americans and the elements -- winter winds, summer fog, and the fierce tidal currents of the Bay of Fundy -- enduring the all-too-real threats of shipwreck and possible capture and imprisonment. In peacetime, these patrol craft enforced maritime law. In wartime, they engaged in a guerre de course, attacking the enemy's commercial shipping while protecting their own. Now, for the first time, Joshua Smith tells the full story of the battle for the bay.

Germantown A Military History of the Battle for Philadelphia, October 4, 1777 [Audiobook]
English | ASIN: B099G15LS6 | 2021 | 15 hours and 13 minutes |MP3|M4B | 418 MB
Today, Germantown is a busy neighborhood in Philadelphia. On October 4, 1777, it was a small village on the outskirts of the colonial capital whose surrounding fields and streets witnessed one of the largest battles of the American Revolution. The bloody battle represented George Washington's attempt to recapture Philadelphia but has long been overshadowed by better-known events like Brandywine, Saratoga, and Valley Forge. General Sir William Howe launched his campaign to capture Philadelphia in late July 1777, with an army of 16,500 British and Hessian soldiers aboard a 265-ship armada sailing from New York. Six difficult weeks later, Howe's expedition landed near Elkton, Maryland, and moved north into Pennsylvania.
Washington's rebel army did all it could to harass Howe and fought and lost a major battle at Brandywine on September 11. Philadelphia fell to the British. On October 4, obscured by darkness and a heavy morning fog, Washington launched a surprise attack on the British garrison at Germantown. His early attack found initial success and drove the British legions before him. The recapture of the colonial capital seemed within Washington's grasp until poor decisions by the American high command brought about a reversal of fortune and a clear British victory.

Author: Nathan N. Prefer | Narrator: Jones Allen
When General Douglas MacArthur arrived in Australia in March 1942, having successfully left the Philippines to organize a new American army, he vowed, "I shall return!" More than two years later he did return, at the head of a large U.S. army to retake the Philippines from the Japanese. The place of his re-invasion was the central Philippine Island of Leyte. Much has been written about the naval Battle of Leyte Gulf that his return provoked, but almost nothing has been written about the three-month long battle to seize Leyte itself.
