Colonialism, China and the Chinese Amidst Empires
Peter Monteath, "Colonialism, China and the Chinese: Amidst Empires "
English | ISBN: 1138389404 | 2019 | 210 pages | EPUB | 730 KB
This book explores the place of China and the Chinese during the age of imperialism. Focusing not only on the state but also on the vitality of Chinese culture and the Chinese diaspora, it examines the seeming contradictions of a period in which China came under immense pressure from imperial expansion while remaining a major political, cultural and demographic force in its own right. Where histories of China commonly highlight episodes of conflict and subjugation in China's relations with the West, the contributions to this volume explore the complex spaces where empires and their peoples did not merely collide but also became entangled.

Obama and China's Rise An Insider's Account of America's Asia Strategy
Obama and China's Rise: An Insider's Account of America's Asia Strategy By Jeffrey A. Bader
2012 | 188 Pages | ISBN: 0815722427 | PDF | 7 MB
In 2005 Jeffrey Bader, a veteran U.S. diplomat and Asia policy analyst, was asked to meet and discuss international trade policy with the junior U.S. senator from Illinois. Bader came away greatly struck and impressed by Barack Obama and eventually came to co-chair the presidential candidate s advisory team on Asia policy. When Obama assumed the presidency, Bader became the senior director for East Asian affairs with the National Security Council. In Obama and China s Rise, Bader discusses what he did, what he saw, and what it meant for Obama s policy toward the all-important East Asia region first in the presidential campaign, and then in his administration. The result is a fascinating backstage view of the formulation and execution of American foreign policy as well as a candid evaluation of the same, including recommendations for future policy. Obama s intent was to extend U.S. influence and presence in East Asia, which he felt had been neglected because of American preoccupation with the war on terror, the Middle East, and especially Iraq. China s rise, particularly its military buildup, was causing sleepless nights for its neighbors. Bader describes the Obama administration s efforts to develop stable relations with China while building stronger relationships with troubled allies and partners in the face of Beijing s rising assertiveness. Bader combines insightful and authoritative foreign policy analysis with a revealing and humanizing personal narrative of that effort.

Vietnam and the South China Sea Politics, Security and Legality
Do Thanh Hai, "Vietnam and the South China Sea: Politics, Security and Legality "
English | ISBN: 1138929972 | 2016 | 274 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
Studies of the escalating tensions and competing claims in the South China Sea overwhelmingly focus on China and its increasingly assertive approach, while the position of the other claimants is overlooked. This book focuses on the attitude of Vietnam towards the South China Sea dispute. It examines the position from a historical perspective, shows how Vietnam's position is affected by its wish to maintain good relations with China on a range of issues, and outlines how Vietnam has occasionally made overtures to both the United States and Japan in order to bolster its position, and considered the possibility, so far resisted, of taking China to formal arbitration under the auspices of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. The book concludes by assessing the future prospects for Vietnam's position in the dispute.

Mao's China and the Sino-Soviet Split Ideological Dilemma
Mingjiang Li, "Mao's China and the Sino-Soviet Split: Ideological Dilemma "
English | ISBN: 1138018023 | 2014 | 212 pages | PDF | 2 MB
The Sino-Soviet split in the 1960s was one of the most significant events of the Cold War. Why did the Sino-Soviet alliance, hailed by its creators as "unbreakable", "eternal", and as representing "brotherly solidarity", break up? Why did their relations eventually evolve into open hostility and military confrontation? With the publication of several works on the subject in the past decade, we are now in a better position to understand and explain the origins of the Sino-Soviet split. But at the same time new questions and puzzles have also emerged. The scholarly debate on this issue is still fierce. This book, the result of extensive research on declassified documents at the Chinese Foreign Ministry, and on numerous other new Chinese materials, sheds new light on the problem and makes a significant contribution to the debate. More than simply an empirical case study, by theorising the concept of the ideological dilemma, Mingjiang Li's book attempts to address the relationship between ideology and foreign policy and discusses such pressing questions as why it is that an ideology can sometimes effectively dictate foreign policy, whilst at other times exercises almost no significant influence at all.

Britain, Japan and China, 1876-1895 East Asian International Relations before the First Sino-Japanese War
Yu Suzuki, "Britain, Japan and China, 1876-1895: East Asian International Relations before the First Sino-Japanese War "
English | ISBN: 1138354716 | 2020 | 222 pages | EPUB | 527 KB
This book revises the conventional wisdom about the Anglo-Japanese relationship in the late nineteenth century that these two countries were bound by mutual sympathy and common interests, and therefore the common ground which led to the signing of the Anglo-Japanese Alliance in 1902, had already existed in the 1880s. Such understandings fail to take account of the fact that the Qing dynasty of China had emerged as the strongest regional power in East Asia by reasserting its influence as the traditional suzerain of the region in the years prior to the First Sino-Japanese War. The British and the Japanese governments clearly recognised that it would become difficult to maintain their interests in East Asia if they antagonised the Qing by challenging its claim of suzerainty over Korea. It was difficult for them to come to closer terms when their priority before 1894-5 was to maintain good relations with China, and when they were also experiencing numerous diplomatic difficulties with each other.
