The Discovery of a Visual System - The Honeybee
The Discovery of a Visual System - The Honeybee by Adrian Horridge
English | PDF | 2019 | 293 Pages | ISBN : 1789240891 | 6.6 MB
This book is the only account of what honeybees actually see. Bees detect some visual features such as edges and colours, but there is no sign that they reconstruct patterns or put together features to form objects. Bees detect motion but have no perception of what it is that moves, and certainly they do not recognize "things" by their shapes. Yet they clearly see well enough to fly and find food with a minute brain. Bee vision is therefore relevant to the construction of simple artificial visual systems, for example for mobile robots. The surprising conclusion is that bee vision is adapted to the recognition of places, not things.

Modern French Visual Theory A critical reader
Nigel Saint, "Modern French Visual Theory: A critical reader"
English | ISBN: 0719081300 | 2013 | 288 pages | PDF | 44 MB
When French theory went global in the late twentieth century its visual wing was understandably built on the work of its best-known thinkers, notably Foucault, Derrida, Barthes and Deleuze. However these names merely scratch the surface of a vibrant and innovative body of theory that has been produced in France over the last six decades. As well as a substantial interview with Sorbonne professor Bernard Vouilloux, this volume focuses on a range of theorists who usually sit under the academic radar, especially when outside of France: Arasse, Buci-Glucksmann, Damisch, Debray, Didi-Huberman, Heinich, Marin, Schefer and Stiegler. Also discussed is the important work on the visual by Baudrillard, Merleau-Ponty, Metz and Nancy. All of these thinkers are given introductory and exploratory treatment here, and are allowed to talk between themselves. By looking at a wider set of theories and theorists relating to the visual, the debates are able to cross-fertilize, with the chapters divided into five major areas: phenomenology and beyond; new art histories and genealogies; semiotics and methodologies; memory and the body; and the digital era. This volume brings together international scholars working within Visual Culture and Art History, to look in detail at a range of issues in French contemporary visual theory. The chapters cover the main media of visual culture: fine art, cinema, museology, photography, as well as the key philosophical coordinates of modern times - phenomenology, structuralism and semiology, post-structuralism, psychoanalysis, sociology, aesthetics and Marxism. Throughout, the volume offers in-depth accounts of keywords, broad critical and historical contexts, and close attention to the language of visual theory.

Vocabulary is at the root of all communication. Join Mia McCormick, and special guest RC Concepcion, for a conversation with Daniel Gregory, a fine art photographer based in Seattle. This class is intended to help you develop a set of tools that can enable you to gain a deeper understanding of your voice, your vision, and ultimately your work. Those tools come in the form of gaining awareness of your intention before you get behind the camera, and in developing a visual vocabulary that will help you analyze your work and aid you in talking about your work with confidence. You may leave the class with more questions than answers, but the process of discovery that you embark upon will bring you closer to your work and improve your ability to communicate visually with the world.

Processing: A Programming Handbook for Visual Designers and Artists By Casey Reas, Ben Fry, John Maeda
2007 | 736 Pages | ISBN: 0262182629 | PDF | 16 MB
I got this book for my boyfriend for Valentines Day, and he was incredibly excited. Apparently it's THE book for processing, and he's already figured out how to do new stuff from reading it. I know nothing about programming, but I flipped through it and it seemed easy enough to understand. It's a beautiful hardbound book. Highly recommend for aspiring processors.

Theories of Visual Perception
Theories of Visual Perception By Ian E. Gordon
2004 | 271 Pages | ISBN: 1841693839 | PDF | 5 MB
This study, which explains theorizing in perception, pays particular attention to vision. Describing three pieces of research work which have won the Nobel Prize, the text observes perception at work in daily life and explains how readers can be trained to increase their awareness. Subjects covered include the three-factor and opponent-process theories of colour and vision, neural processes in the retina, the Gestalt theory, ecological optics and the computational theory of vision. Although the text has been aimed primarily at undergraduate psychology students, it has been written in a straightforward manner which should also be of benefit to students in related disciplines, such as philosophy and physiology.
