Colonial Institutions and Civil War Indirect Rule and Maoist Insurgency in India
Shivaji Mukherjee, "Colonial Institutions and Civil War: Indirect Rule and Maoist Insurgency in India "
English | ISBN: 1108844995 | 2021 | 300 pages | PDF | 12 MB
What explains the peculiar spatial variation of Maoist insurgency in India? Mukherjee develops a novel typology of colonial indirect rule and land tenure in India, showing how they can lead to land inequality, weak state and Maoist insurgency. Using a multi-method research design that combines qualitative analysis of archival data on Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh states, Mukherjee demonstrates path dependence of land/ethnic inequality leading to Maoist insurgency. This is nested within a quantitative analysis of a district level dataset which uses an instrumental variable analysis to address potential selection bias in colonial choice of princely states. The author also analyses various Maoist documents, and interviews with key human rights activists, police officers, and bureaucrats, providing rich contextual understanding of the motivations of agents. Furthermore, he demonstrates the generalizability of his theory to cases of colonial frontier indirect rule causing ethnic secessionist insurgency in Burma, and the Taliban insurgency in Pakistan.

Civil Society in the Global South
Civil Society in the Global South by Palash Kamruzzaman
English | November 29, 2018 | ISBN: 113808025X, 0367617315 | 278 pages | PDF | 2 MB
In recent years civil society has been seen as a key route for democracy promotion and solving development 'problems' in low-income countries. However, the very concept of civil society is deeply rooted in European traditions and values. In pursuing civil society reform in non-Western countries, many scholars along with well-meaning international agencies and donor organisations fail to account for non-Western values and historical experiences. Civil Society in the Global South seeks to redress this balance by offering diverse accounts of civil society from the global South, authored by scholars and researchers who are reflecting on their observations of civil society in their own countries.

Building a Palestinian State The Incomplete Revolution
Building a Palestinian State: The Incomplete Revolution By Glenn E. Robinson
1997 | 248 Pages | ISBN: 0253332176 | PDF | 5 MB
...provides a unique analysis of the various facets of grassroots organizations and their interaction with the emerging state institutions...a major and very timely contribution. - Ann Lesch. In this well-informed and accessibly written book, Glenn E. Robinson traces the emergence of a new political elite in the West Bank and Gaza in the 1980s and the grassroots political and social revolution it launched during the Intifada. Local self-help organizations forged in this period - student groups, labor unions, women's committees, agricultural relief committees, medical relief associations, and voluntary works organizations - took power away from the notables (the traditional landowning elite) and began building popular institutions which organized Palestinian society and which Israel found impossible to eliminate. Yet, in the post-Oslo period, power in the post-intifada polity was captured by an outside political force: Yasir Arafat and the PLO. The resulting disjunction between the grassroots popular authority of the new institutions and the centralizing, authoritarian tendencies of the PLO undermines the prospects for building a stable Palestinian state.

Boundaries in the Medieval and Wider World Essays in Honour of Paul Freedman
Boundaries in the Medieval and Wider World: Essays in Honour of Paul Freedman By Thomas W. Barton, Susan McDonough, Sara McDougall, Matthew Wranovix
2017 | 358 Pages | ISBN: 2503568459 | PDF | 3 MB
Throughout his distinguished career at Vanderbilt and Yale, Paul H. Freedman has established a reputation for pushing against and crossing perceived boundaries within history and within the historical discipline. His numerous works have consistently ventured into uncharted waters: from studies uncovering the hidden workings of papal bureaucracy and elite understandings of subaltern peasants, to changing perceptions of exotic products and the world beyond Europe, to the role modern American restaurants have played in taking cuisine in exciting new directions. The fifteen essays collected in this volume have been written by Paul Freedman's former students and closest colleagues to both honour his extraordinary achievements and to explore some of their implications for medieval and post-medieval European society and historical study. Together, these studies assess and explore a range of different boundaries, both tangible and theoretical: boundaries relating to law, religion, peasants, historiography, and food, medicine, and the exotic. While drawing important conclusions about their subjects, the collected essays identify historical quandaries and possibilities to guide future research and study.
