As opposed to what you might assume, saving seeds from food plants is astonishingly easy. People have done it for hundreds of years without the benefit of school degrees and complex customs.
There are several simple plants from which you can start saving seeds, like lettuce, tomatoes, beans, cucumber, and pumpkins, to name only a few.
The steps are straightforward. You grow your plants. You let some of them go to seed (that is, leave them to mature, flower and then let the seeds ripen).
And then you collect some seed. Keep the seed protected and dry until the following season, when you can start the cycle again by planting your seeds to grow your food.
You don't need to do anything special other than letting the plants grow. Saving seeds is a way to generate free food. You could grow a free lunch by saving and growing your seeds.

There are loads of good reasons to compost. It saves money, saves resources, can help improve your soil and reduce your environmental impact.
Composting couldn't be easier. If you have a small space in your backyard, pile up the plant garbage from your backyard and kitchen trash that doesn't contain meat, fish, dairy products, or oils.
You can combine coffee grounds and eggshells if you have them. Include grass cuttings, fallen leaves and other backyard garbage. You can cast in manure from plant-eating pets, such as goats, chickens, rabbits or cows, but don't add dog droppings or cat litter (they may carry infections).
When the compost heap is high, it will start heating up and crumbling down. Stir it up with a shovel regularly, moving the decomposing material out of the pile's center and pushing still whole ingredients to the middle.
The compost is available to use when it looks and feels like chocolate cake crumbs: Dark brown and quickly broken up chunks.
