On November 2nd, 1940, US Army Reserve Officer Captain Donald Wilson Adams received a telegram that placed him on active duty for one year and ordered him to report, without dependents, to Fort Sill, Oklahoma. On October 4th, 1945, Lt. Col. Adams embarked the RMS Queen Elizabeth to return home to family at the end of World War 2, almost 5 years after he was ordered to report.

This is not a story of battlefield tactics or a discussion of the grand strategic decisions of World War 2. It is the story of one man and his observations as he trained, fought, liberated, occupied, and survived as a Battalion Commander of Field Artillery, on the western front of the European Theatre. It is a story of logistics, weather, trains, trucks and family. These are the recollections and thoughts of a young man, one of many serving and sacrificing in the name of his country.
