Wine and Conversation
Wine and Conversation By Adrienne Lehrer
2009 | 332 Pages | ISBN: 0195307933 | PDF | 4 MB
The vocabulary of wine is large and exceptionally vibrant -- from straight-forward descriptive words like "sweet" and "fragrant", colorful metaphors like "ostentatious" and "brash", to the more technical lexicon of biochemistry. The world of wine vocabulary is growing alongside the current popularity of wine itself, particularly as new words are employed by professional wine writers, who not only want to write interesting prose, but avoid repetition and cliché. The question is, what do these words mean? Can they actually reflect the objective characteristics of wine, and can two drinkers really use and understand these words in the same way? In this second edition of Wine and Conversation, linguist Adrienne Lehrer explores whether or not wine drinkers (both novices and experts) can in fact understand wine words in the same way. Her conclusion, based on experimental results, is no. Even though experts do somewhat better than novices in some experiments, they tend to do well only on wines on which they are carefully trained and/or with which they are very familiar. Does this mean that the elaborate language we use to describe wine is essentially a charade? Lehrer shows that although scientific wine writing requires a precise and shared use of language, drinking wine and talking about it in casual, informal setting with friends is different, and the conversational goals include social bonding as well as communicating information about the wine. Lehrer also shows how language innovation and language play, clearly seen in the names of new wines and wineries, as well as wine descriptors, is yet another influence on the burgeoning and sometimes whimsical world of wine vocabulary.

Christians in Conversation A Guide to Late Antique Dialogues in Greek and Syriac
Christians in Conversation: A Guide to Late Antique Dialogues in Greek and Syriac (Oxford Studies in Late Antiquity) by Alberto Rigolio
2019 | ISBN: 0190915455 | English | 312 pages | True PDF | 20 MB
This book addresses a particular and little-known form of writing, the prose dialogue, during the Late Antique period, when Christian authors adopted and transformed the dialogue form to suit the new needs of religious debate. Connected to, but departing from, the dialogues of Classical Antiquity, these new forms staged encounters between Christians and pagans, Jews, Manichaeans, and "heretical" fellow Christians. At times fiction, at others records of, or scripts for, actual debates, the dialogues give us a glimpse of Late Antique rhetoric as it was practiced and tell us about the theological arguments underpinning religious differences.

Liberty and Equality The American Conversation (American Political Thought)
Liberty and Equality: The American Conversation (American Political Thought) by S. Adam Seagrave
English | September 9, 2015 | ISBN: 0700621741 | 336 pages | AZW3 | 0,740 MB
Alexis de Tocqueville, one of the greatest commentators on the American political tradition, viewed it through the lens of two related ideas: liberty and equality. These ideas, so eloquently framed by Thomas Jefferson in the Declaration of Independence, have remained inextricably and uniquely conjoined in American political thought: equality is understood as the equal possession of natural rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. By considering American reflections on these core ideas over time-in relation to constitutional principles, religion, and race-this volume provides an especially insightful perspective for understanding our political tradition. The book is at once a summary of American history told through ideas and an inquiry into the ideas of liberty and equality through the lens of American history.

Church and Revolution Continuing the Conversation between Christianity and Marxism
Church and Revolution: Continuing the Conversation between Christianity and Marxism by Simon Hewitt
English | March 15, 2020 | ISBN: 1789590914 | EPUB | 122 pages | 0.4 MB
Christianity and Marxism are often thought to be irreconcilable. This book argues that this is not the case. It looks at four central focuses of the alleged conflict-atheism, materialism, revolution, and ethics-and shows that in each case tensions can be dissolved. Not only that, but working through the alleged difficulties sheds new light on both Christianity and Marxism and demonstrates that each has something to say to the contemporary world.

Being able to have a quick and comfortable conversation can be helpful in almost every aspect of your life, in your career, your family, and your love life.

This book was written for those in the vast majority who feel nervous or unhinged the second they step into an unfamiliar conversation.
